This September 14, on the 3rd anniversary of Summorum Pontificum going into effect, bishops from around the world will send Pope Benedict XVI their reactions to the motu proprio. From its cover letter:
I invite you, dear Brothers, to send to the Holy See an account of your experiences, three years after this Motu Proprio has taken effect. If truly serious difficulties come to light, ways to remedy them can be sought.
Is not this effectively like calling an informal “Vatican III” council? There probably will be a couple iterations of bishops’ letter-writing, Holy See’s collecting and reviewing, and Pope Benedict’s writing another motu proprio asking for further reactions again, etc.

This doesn’t even remotely sound like a “Vatican III” council. At most, it’s collecting some data from dioceses worldwide on what’s working and what isn’t, and it’s calling for adjustments to be made to the provision, if necessary. It is a very limited mandate.

A “Vatican III” council would call the bishops worldwide to Rome for a LENGTHY series of meetings that could last years, and I would presume that pretty much ANY issue in the church could be placed on the table for discussion, unless the council that was called had a more limited focus.

On average, there is a church council about every 100 years. That’s because that’s how long, on average, it takes to iron out all the kinks and details! Given that formula, I wouldn’t realistically expect another church council before about 2060.

Just my opinion, a Council today would probably be dangerous with so many liberals in charge. just think a moment.

I say no because Vatican II han’t even been fully implemented; we’re still ironing out abuses. If Vatican II were fully implemented Gregorian Chant and Latin would be part of every Mass and we would have altar rails.

**No, because Summorum Pontificum affects ONLY the Latin Church.

It has nothing to do with liturgical rites of the Eastern Catholic Churches, who are likewise traditional.**

Including the non-Roman Rites of the Western Church.

Some are, and some are far less so. IMHO, a good dose of Summorum Pontificum wouldn’t hurt the latter. On the contrary, it would be a great blessing.

A Vatican III??? Heavens no! I haven’t recovered from Vatican II yet.
