This is so sad. But IU could see them moving in this direction for a very long time. Amnesty International has always been a somewhat radical organization. Now they have been completely taken over by self-absorbed and hedonistic radical. So now they teach opposites; End the execution of guilty murderers, but kill babies.

You put it so beautifully – punish the guilty, protect the innocent. How is that so hard for them to understand?

For years, Amnesty has held a neutral position on the issue of abortion, and I think this was largely because of Catholics who held the right to life of the unborn to be a fundamental human right. This was balanced in the organization by liberal secularists who advocated for the right to abortion.

It is sad that a leading human rights organization has taken this position. Human Rights Watch did the same years ago. I have had issues with Amnesty International over other issues in the past (or at least their tactics in regard to those issues), and have always been suspect of their lack of position on abortion. If you have read some of the pieces on their website in the past, however, you seem to get the impression that they have for a while unofficially pro-choice.

What are Catholic schools with established chapters of AI to do over this decision?

I think Catholic members of AI should seriously consider whether this organization is worthy of their continued membership. The question then becomes, however, what human rights organization is worthy of our support?

Certainly there are human rights issues that Catholics and other pro-life Christians should care passionately about, but one of the most important human rights issues is, for many Catholics, the issue of abortion.

Again, this is quite sad.

While researching this matter for a blog post, I learned AI was founded by a Catholic layman, Peter Benenson. How far they have drifted. I’m sorry to hear of their defiance.

Peter’s Pence?
Catholic Charities?
Knights of Columbus?
Not the same mission, I know, but take comfort knowing you’re helping those in need.

Catholic Charities takes government money, and is starting to talk like an organ of the government, not of the Church.

I got something in the mail from the Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute at c-fam.org. Not a recommendation, just a suggestion.
