I had been hired as a temp to do database administration on a bio tech project. They claimed to be doing one thing but when I read the R&D synopsis, it was clear they were developing a targeted abortifacient device (kills preborn children between conception and the time and they implant in the lining of the womb.) One hour into the orientation, I went to the manager and explained that I couldn’t work on this project. He asked if it was because of religious reasons. If I had been told what the project was about I would not have wasted his time. He said they do not disclose the specifics of their work until a confidentially agreement (which I did sign earlier that morning) is signed.

The biotech firm tried to pay me for the entire day. I explained to the temp agency that I could not accept this money. They mailed me the paycheck, I tore it up, they mailed me another one. I figured that if I just ignored their paycheck it would just go back to the biotech firm as unclaimed. It is now 5 years later and I am getting letters from the state, IRS and others that I have to collect these funds.

1. Can I morally receive these funds? Would using them for protecting life just be another version of buying the potter’s field?
2. I signed this confidentiality agreement before I read the R&D report and I have been careful not to breech it. Should I have honored this agreement after I found out what they were working on?

They are obligated by law to do what they are doing. Otherwise they won’t. They also need to do this as due diligence lest there is a threat that you might sue them for it. And no, they can’t take your word that you won’t.

Take the money and donate it to a Pro-life cause.

You did the right thing…simply collect the money and donate it to a pro-life group e.g. Operation Rescue.

I agree that by law the company has to pay you the money. Like those before me, if you donate the money to a pro-life group you might just be able to save a baby. You can’t look at the money as to where it came from because you have to take it. So just look at the money now as something to help save babies.
It is so refreshing to hear stories about people taking a moral stand against evil. Thank you for making my heart and soul feel good, and may God bless you.

I’m not a lawyer so I can’t really say without reading what it is you signed. If the confidentiality agreement isn’t worded correctly, depending upon the state you reside in, it isn’t worth the paper it’s written on.

Always be aware that if the information you are concerned about is in the public domain, then the confidentiality agreement has no effect. I would look on their web site, the web etc. to see if what they are working on has actually been revealed.

I wouldn’t do anything to bring difficulties upon yourself at this stage. I think you did the courageous thing, the right thing and if you can go public without exposing yourself legally…then go for it. Otherwise I think you’ve done your bit.
