30 Pieces of Silver

Some said its 70 dollars, others millions, others some months wage… (according to yahoo)

How much would 30 pieces of silver be worth now? What would be the “price” Judas sold out Jesus for? I looked up a few, all different amswers.

Any Ideas?

Something else to keep in mind, that’s what 30 pieces of their silver is worth to us in our modern age. That’s not as much as it would be worth back then. Example the amount of bread one could get with 30 of their silver in the modern day is probably less then the amount of bread that much could buy back in ~30AD. So while it’s true it may be worth about 20 dollars today, that’s not the value of the currency Judas was getting back in the day.

I have read that it was the price of a slave.

Henri Daniel-Rops in Daily Life in the time of Jesus says the value of the silver in it would be about $1.14 in 1961.
 
A day’s wage for an ordinary worker at the time was a denarius, which was a silver coin. Evidently this had the purchasing power of about $20. Yes, the poor really were poorer back then, compared to the modern West.

If it was 30 denarii, that would be about a month’s pay, or about $600. Probably these were a different kind of coin, of greater value, but not worth millions. Maybe a few times the value of 30 denarii, but not more than a few thousand dollars worth.
