Has anyone here done this Consecration to Mary either as a parish program or individually?

I have started it, but have some concerns, although I might not be far along enough to have the concerns addressed. I would welcome some feedback on others’ experiences. If you wish to PM me, you may. I am doing this as an individual because our parish does not have this program. My daughter says it has been well received at her parish, and if I continue with it, I may suggest it for an Evangelization Program in our parish. Thank you.

I don’t have any experience with this book but I just saw Father give a talk this afternoon at a retreat. His conversion story is remarkable! He wrote this book in just 10 days. I plan to pick up a copy of this book next chance I get, they sold out of them at the retreat.

Following this thread. I’m very interested in the Consecration.

I am on day 4. I have been researching it quite a bit and I have heard all positives.

My parish is organizing a group for 33 Days to Morning Glory, right now. We plan to start July 2, and consecrate August 15, Assumption.

Father Gaitley has another book out, Consoling the Heart of Jesus. It took 10 years for him to write this book. It’s another do-it-yourself retreat book based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola.

Dear CB,

I used this book to renew my consecration last year individually, and I really got a lot out of it. The way he progressed through the great Marian saints to make different points about the consecration was a really cool way of approaching it, I thought.

Another thing I really found useful was Fr. Gaitley’s way of writing. He explains slowly and lucidly, but engagingly at the same time. It’s neither a convoluted treatise nor a children’s book.

So, I would definitely recommend it. But you don’t have to take my word for it.

God bless,

I have the book, and a nearby parish’s Mothers’ Club used the book to make the consecration for March 25th, but I was unable to participate in the preparation. I’d love to do the preparation using the book with someone, but my parish isn’t interested in doing it, so it looks like I will have to do it alone as well.

Asia, I have that book (Consoling The Heart of Jesus) as well and have gone through it twice. I liked it very much. What did you think of it?

I have used a different Montfort consecration book before. I plan on re-doing the consecration to get a greater benefit out of it once I join the Catholic Church officially.

I’ve only looked at the book, at my local Catholic Bookstore. My Parish Bible study group is considering doing it next after 33 Days to Morning Glory. It looks like a good one. I’m glad to hear you like it. Everyone, who has read the book/done the exercises— loves it.

When I wonder about a book, I find reviews of it and check them out.

I read Fr Gaitley’s other book, Consoling the Heart of Jesus, with my children, and I learned a lot from it. Since we were reading it out loud and he has a very casual style, it was a little odd at times, but I found it to be really excellent. He had a way of putting things so they made sense in a different way; he uses a lot of analogies (I do too :)); and he had a lot of ways of adding devotions into one’s life.

He is, afaict, totally orthodox and holy, but in the language of today. He doesn’t let you off the hook at all, but he makes it seem… I don’t want to say easier, but the opposite of inducing “Catholic guilt,” which I don’t think anyone really wanted to do. He sort of says, well, it’s ok that you are where you are, but if you want to get somewhere (like Heaven!) then you do have to move, and here’s one way of doing it-- does that make sense?

It’s an excellent book. It’s based on the consecration that St. Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort
wrote about in his book “Treatise on the True Devotion to the Blessed Virgin.” ewtn.com/library/montfort/truedevo.htm I’ve done this Consecration to Mary and it’s one of the best decisions I have ever made. Although after I read de Montfort’s book, the decision was an easy one. Mary always leads in one direction…towards her Son. I believe that all of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word (EWTN), and Mother Angelica and all of her Sisters, the Poor Clares of Perpetual Adoration have taken the de Montfort consecration. Others who have taken this consecration are Blessed John Paul ll, Blessed Mother Teresa, St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe, and Johnnette Benkovic to name a few. It’s a beautiful devotion!

Peace, Mark

I have a problem with his “methods” - they hem me in too much. I can’t always be thinking of all of the helpful reminders that one should commit to memory, nor can I remember all of them. It would be very helpful, for someone like myself, to have “group support”, but I know no one local who has read the book, and my parish is more of a sixties’ place so they would not be interested in things like this.

Other than that, I love the idea of being a consoler to the Heart of Jesus and feel very drawn to it.

Thank you for your replies. I am on Day 6 now, and am finding myself not really into it. I think part of the problem may be a lack of group support. There is simply no one around here to ask questions of or talk things over with, or offer encouragement or even share with.

Usually I have a group of friends that meet regularly, like my Cursillo Group, or my Sat. spiritual direction group, and we quite freely share and support and help each other, even outside of the group meetings. So I am quite spoiled and having difficulty going it alone. Also, I have been on a LOA from work and am frequently in pain and distracted. I will plug on, though, and see what happens. I might be quite surprised 🙂

I am on day 6 too!! I’m starting to get it but it seems like a big deal to hand everything over to Mary. I’m hoping that this gets more comfortable to grasp as I keep going. I haven’t found anyone that regrets doing it, so that’s a good.

Yes, this is exactly the thing I am having trouble grasping also. That is why I think it would be helpful to have a group or some direction, etc. I will keep praying to the Holy Spirit about this, as is suggested.

You both might prefer St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion much better, but be sure you get the Fr. Faber translation.

I’m on week 4 of this program: Mother Teresa. Our church is using small groups, and from what I can tell from this thread, it seems that makes a difference. The program is sound enough and easy to digest, but it’s the “Pondering” and small group discussion which seems to carry most of the action.

The small groups brings different perspectives, responses, to the material. If pondering on the saint’s wisdom wasn’t enough to move your soul, pondering on how others reacted to the readings will. I still don’t know where I stand in the whole ‘consecration’ thing, but I suppose that’s the point of the retreat. It’s a process, not a checklist. I am glad to be learning about it.
