I just came back to practicing the faith and I’ve been praying the LOTH and its the 4th week of Easter and I when to Mass yesterday where they say the Mass according to the Tridentine Rite and it was the 3rd Sunday of Eastertide. Why the difference?

Thank you for your help,
Daniel Sisk

In the calendar of the TLM, Sundays are ranked “Sunday X **after **Easter” (Dominica X post Pascha) whereas in the NO, Easter is counted so it is “Sunday X **of **Easter(tide)” (Dominica X Paschae) with Easter being the I Sunday of the season (Eastertide).

So II Sunday of Eastertide is the I Sunday after Easter, the III Sunday of Eastertide is the II Sunday after Easter, and so on.

Moreover, on the new calendar yesterday was Good Shepherd Sunday, which was last week on the old calendar.

Yes, my pastor threw us for a loop by mentioning Good Shepherd Sunday at the NO on the day of its observance in the old calendar, and I thought it odd that the “same” Sunday (i.e. Good Shepherd) would now employ different readings. When the actual Gospel text came around I realized what had happened. In one of the flukes that comes from straddling two calendars, I wound up never celebrating the Mass for Good Shepherd Sunday because the next week I was back to my usual TLM.

I went to a TLM 10 days ago, and a NO last Sunday. I wondered why they seemed like the same Mass with all the references to shepherds and sheep and the like.

Also what is regarded as the second Sunday of Easter aka Divine Mercy Sunday on the current calendar was regarded as Quasimodo or Low Sunday. It is the octave day of Easter and so is regarded as still Easter day. Making Good Shepherd Sunday the 2nd Sunday after Easter on the old calendar, this Sunday is 4th Sunday after Easter on the old calendar.
