4 way medal

Everyone is familiar with the 4 way type of medal. Some people use them for scapular medals as they have images of The Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. They also have a Miraculous Medal on them. Is the MM valid, even if it’s so small the inscription is unreadable or nonexistent? Isn’t the writing an integral part of the spiritual benefit and signal graces promised as part of the devotion?

As long as YOU recognize what it is supposed to be, out serves the purpose of a valid sacramental.

I have a four-way cross medal that I received as a Confirmation gift. However, recently I have chosen to wear a Crucifix and a Miraculous Medal out of personal preference. I didn’t like how the four-way cross did not have a Corpus, and I wanted my MM to be larger. Of course, the four-way medal also has many benefits so it is always a fine choice.

That being said, I don’t know that the MM on the four-way cross, despite its small size, would somehow deprive the medal of its sacramental value. Although, I could be mistaken as I know some sacramentals (for example, scapulars) are required to have specific characteristics.
