5th Grade Faith Formation

Does anyone have any ideas about teaching the Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, or Holy Matrimony to a room full of 5th graders? I would especially like something activity-based; they love games, but I fear they are tiring of my endless variations of trivia games on the subject.

I don’t really care for their textbook, so generally I do a little bit of lecture and we have discussion for about 45 minutes (half of the class), then play a game or do an activity to reinforce discussion for the second half of class.

We have already had classes on the Sacraments they have already participated in (Baptism, Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation), so they have a better understanding of these that made discussion slightly easier.

We are coming up on the end of the year, and I would really just like a fresh idea or two for these more difficult topics.

Google “lap books”. You will find a lot of You Tube videos from homeschooling resources.

Lap books can be made out of file folders, and you can have the kids make various mini-books within the lap book on the sacramental topic at hand. They can use info and definitions found in their books to create their own lap book. You can get creative with embellishments on the lap books-- stickers, ribbon, coloring, etc.

In fact if you google “sacrament lap book” you will find a ton of examples

I should probably have clarified; I don’t care for the series of books because I think they’re too fluffy for 5th graders (we use Sadlier’s We Believe). The information is solid, and that is what we use to fuel our discussions, but most of the activities are lacking.

This is my first time in a faith formation class since my own experience, so I am still trying to figure out the best way to teach!
