$750 Million Earmarked for Healthy Marriage Promotion and Responsible Fatherhood Programs
For Immediate Release
The Alliance for Marriage today applauds final House passage of community-based Healthy Marriage promotion in the Budget Reconciliation Act, which President Bush is expected to sign into law.
The Act includes $500 million over five years for marriage strengthening and $250 million over five years for fatherhood programs.
“The health of American families built upon marriage affects us all,” said Matt Daniels, president and founder of the Alliance for Marriage. “And this is why the President’s plan to use a modest portion of welfare funding to invest in building stronger marriages in America is good social policy.”
“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” stated Daniels. “Not only will families and children benefit from these programs, but America’s taxpayers will as well.”
“The federal government already spends a large sum of money to treat the social fallout of family decline, crime, drug-abuse, school drop-outs, and so on,” added Daniels. “Thus, it is most appropriate for our nation to invest in marriage-strengthening programs designed to prevent such problems in the first place.”
The Healthy Marriage funds may be used to support grassroots community organizations providing marriage education and relationship skills training for unmarried low-income couples, pre-marital education for engaged couples, and marriage enhancement and skills training for married couples to decrease the probability of divorce. Funding could be used for education initiatives, public ad campaigns and mentoring programs that teach the value of marriage and the skills needed to increase marital stability and the keys to healthy engaged couples.
The Alliance for Marriage is a multicultural coalition whose Board of Advisors includes Rev. Walter Fauntroy – the D.C. Coordinator of the March on Washington for Martin Luther King Jr. – as well as other civil rights and religious leaders, and national legal experts.
