The year is 8500 A.D. A tomb which appears to be that of a president of an ancient state called the U.S.A. has been discovered and opened, and much evidence indicates that the corpse is that of John Kennedy. However skeptics (notably archeologist Phew Cad-Furrie) argue that John Kennedy never existed and that this tomb is of a much more recent provenance. Inside of this tomb was also found an ancient flag made of linen, so a carbon-14 dating was arranged. Much to the satisfaction of Prof. Cad-Furrie, the C-14 evidence indicated that the flag was only 800 years old, and, therefore, the tomb could not be that of the mythical US president, John Kennedy. Here I must add that in the year 8500 A.D. nuclear weapons had been outlawed for thousands of years, and all memory of these awful devices had been lost.
Some “true believers” made the wild claim that way back in the 20th century a weapon called an atomic bomb had been developed, and that testing of these evil devices had doubled the atmospheric level of carbon fourteen. If this actually was the case, then linen grown in 1963 would have had a double amount of carbon fourteen, and that would have made the flag in question date about 5700 years younger than it really was using the C-14 method. Of course our friend Mr. Cad-Furrie ridiculed this idea.
I present this scenario in order to illustrate the fact that carbon fourteen evidence does not always indicate the date of an archeological relic. In rare cases this evidence can be proof of an event. In the case of JFK’s tomb in 8500 A.D., the C-14 evidence would be proof of atmospheric nuclear weapons testing in the 20th century. In the case of the holy Shroud of Turin, the C-14 evidence does not indicate a date, but rather is proof that our Lord’s corpse really did vanish from the inside of His tomb just as our Holy Gospels say.
