It was before the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that Maria del Refugio received the call to found a religious institute. Her mission consisted of spreading love for the Eucharist, educating people and proclaiming the Gospel, and making reparation for the sins of the world. In particular, Maria felt entrusted with the salvation of children and young people.

Widowed seven years earlier, this 29 year old widow and mother began the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and endured intense persecution during the Mexican Revolution. At one point, this meant running the Institute from a cellar and sending her sisters to Spain and Italy to keep them out of harm.
