Hi everyone,
When my fiance and I were engaged, we began reading books about Catholic marriage. Some were 30 years old, others only covered one topic (e.g. how to approach NFP as a Catholic).
Over Christmas, friends of ours were engaged. In conversations i had had previous to the engagement, i noted my friend was approaching children contrary to church teaching. She spoke about how she had been raised around children all her life, and how it would be only ‘healthy’ for her and her fiance to wait to have kids.
My fiance and I feel that they have some jaded understanding of the Church’s approach to marriage, and their situation is all too familiar. We too faced similar misconceptions before doing some research. As an engagement gift, we would like to get them a book which covers important issues dealing with marriage and the family. Have you any suggestions? Thanks in advance. 🙂

Life-Giving Love by Kimberly Hahn is the best book I have ever read in terms of NFP/Marriage/Family. I’ve read it many, many times.

Every Woman’s Battle by Shannon Ethridge and Every Man’s Battle by Stephen Arterbaum were excellent for both my husband and I at opening up our eyes to even the most deceptive ways Satan tries to steal our hearts from our spouses. It is less about children and more about fidelity in marriage, specific to the ways husbands and wives are individually most vulnerable.

Good luck, you are a good friend. 🙂

I’d recommend both the books that Princess Abby posted, particularly “Life Giving Love”. My husband and I really liked “A Catholic Handbook for Engaged and Newly Married Couples” by Frederick Marks too. It’s very practical and puts Catholic teaching into everyday married life. I’ve heard good things about “First Comes Love” by Scott Hahn, though haven’t read it yet.

Would care to elaborate on what you found out in your research that made you both change your minds and hearts? Perhaps your witness could speak volumes to your friends…

Good idea Augustine. I’m just not sure if an opportunity will arise for such a conversation, with the right place and time. I met them through a youth group 2 years ago, and they now go to school in the states.

I strongly second that! Christopher West was very helpful to my wife and I on these topics. He is the Director of the Office of Marriage and Family Life for the Archdiocese of Denver. His book is great!
Yes, West’s book is great. This is a great thread since I teach NFP to engaged couples here in Denver. I’m always looking for other resources to refer couples to.

Chris West is no longer in Denver, unfortunately, and has not been the director of the Office of Marriage and Family Life for quite a few years. He is out east to be with his wife’s family, I believe. He’s very missed in Denver!

“Journey of Faith: Catholic Marriage Preparation” by Deacon Roy Barkley, Ph.D. This is a thoughtful and practical orthodox resource, very readable, geared toward those engaged couples wanting/needing a greater understanding of* the Catholic “rules” about marriage and also the thinking behind them. *You can order through the publisher Queenship Publisher at # (800) 647-9882, order #$7.95 (I just called to confirm).

Product Description:
A Marriage Book with a Difference!

A Revolutionary Message

“I’ve been married 35 years and have not heard this taught.” “This is the key that I have been missing.” “A lightbulb moment.” “You connected all the dots for me.” “As a counselor, I have never been so excited about any material.” “You’re on to something huge here.”

A Simple Message

A wife has one driving need – to feel loved. When that need is met, she is happy. A husband has one driving need – to feel respected. When that need is met, he is happy.

When either of these needs isn’t met, things get crazy. “Love and Respect” reveals why spouses react negatively to each other, and how they can deal with such conflict quickly, easily and biblically.

A Message That Works

Based on over three decades of counseling, as well as scientific and biblical research, Dr. Emerson Eggerichs and his wife, Sarah, have already taken the “Love and Respect” message across America and are changing the way couples talk to, think about, and treat each other.

What do you want for your marriage? Want some peace? Want to feel close? Want to feel valued? Want to experience marriage the way God intended? Then why not try some “Love and Respect.”

I believe it! He was very helpful to my wife and me when we lived in Denver. I’m sure he is a blessing to whatever community he is now in.

God Bless,

Robert.

PS You still have one of the best Archbishops! I miss him, but luckily he writes articles accessible on the web. 😃
