A Career Question

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right forum but I think I need a family man’s perspective on this

The facts: I’m a 23 year old MBA student who has an internship with the Fed. Gov. Both are unsatisfying, and I feel as though they not serving God.

The problem: I feel called to marraige and family life. With that also comes responsibility of providing for your family, which I do not see as a burden but a blessing. On the flip side, I also feel called to serve God in some way and with a big chunk of life taken away by seemingly meaningless work, I feel that my hands are tied. My dream job would be to serve God in some way and make a decent living as well but I have no idea what that could be?

Any ideas/comments? Thanks!

Finish the MBA. You don’t say what KIND of government work you’re doing. The federal government is large and has much activity, so the chances are good that there’s something for just about everyone in that. It would be less demanding, generally, than a private sector job.

Of course one area to look for fulfilling work is the nonprofit sector. Folks say this, and its generally true. But it’s also possible to find dull stuff there as well.

Your best bet is to “know thyself” and know what really makes you tick. THEN you should analyze your best situations, asking yourself, “do I NEED structure?” Some excellent people really need a system and supervisor to get them to do the maximum pushups possible, so to speak.

The Catholic Church obviously can use MBAs: it’s a large organization. Call up the Bishop’s office and talk to folks there.

You are totally correct. You do not need an MBA (i have an MBA and am a graduate of West Point) and i consider all of that a waste.

SERVE GOD! He is the eternal Truth and nothing else that is worldly is worthwhile.

i am envious to see someone at 23 that is wiser than me at 53.

Socrates and Captian America said it the best. Know thyself. Don’t feel guilty if you haven’t gotten it all figured out by 23 yet, though. I’m 29, and I have no idea what I’m doing in life.

Everything in your life God already has foreknowledge of. So if you have doubts, seek Him earnestly and deeply in prayer, but don’t make any abrupt decisions without being convinced that they are God’s will. We need convicted Catholics in all walks of life, not just in the religious environment. God can use any person anywhere anyhow, provided that the person is completely in love with God. Our first job is always to increase our faith, hope and charity in whatever given circumstance; then wait and watch for the inspiration of the Holy Spirit to lead us. The most powerful weapon of evangelization is personal holiness–if we work on that, God will work on the rest.
