what could a catholic talk about to non- believers that would not be useless or idle but benefical to them

Ask questions:

What do you think about God? or spiritual things?
Why do you think that?
Could you explain that?
Have you ever thought about it this way? 🙂

Also, here’s a little thing I’ve discovered: When I pray around unbelievers, I include them. “I’m going to pray over this situation; let’s bow our heads.” You’d be amazed; most of the time they join in, at least somewhat.

The first thing that leaps to mind is anything that doesn’t require debate. For instance, you can always talk about your feelings, desires, and decisions without any argument from a non-believer.
Well… maybe you would catch flak for decisions, but really, your decisions are yours to make.

I could argue that what made you feel uplifted was endorphines, and not God, but I can’t argue that when you go to church you feel uplifted.

I would argue that what you say isn’t actually as important as how you say it. If you don’t rise to the debate, and speak with humility and love about your own experiences, you are doing much more good than trying to prove someone wrong. I didn’t agree with Pope John Paul II about… well nearly anything really, but how could I argue with his love, compassion, or devotion? I could debate policies, but I couldn’t debate the gravitas of the man. And that, had a profound effect.
