a confession question

This morning I went to confession and I had two things from my past that I remembered that I had never confessed previously. They were both mortal sins from my past (I may have not know they were mortal when I did them-they were from when I was younger and didn’t know my faith very well back then). Anyway, I confessed both of them but I said “I have a couple sins that I don’t think I have ever confessed and they are…” instead of saying “I have a couple sins that I know I didn’t confess and they are…”

I don’t know why I said “I think” when I know that I hadn’t confessed them ever before. I guess I am getting caught up on my wording. Am I being scrupulous?

So what did your Priest say at the end of your confession?

He absolved me. He said the words of absolution after I did my act of contrition.

I just didn’t know if that was misleading saying “I think” vs “I know”. I described what the sins were in full.

Don’t get caught up in your wording. Remember: You’re confessing to God through the Priest. The Priest is only the screen. God understand you. You did not lie at all.

It wasn’t. God looked into your heart. God is not a petty beaureucrat. All is OK. Now go and pet a cat or dog to make them happy

If you did not know they were mortal sins at the time, than your confession was valid, especially if you were not well-versed in your faith, but if you knew they were mortal and did not reveal them, than that would be a sacreligious confession and would make your confession invalid.

You would have to tell the priest the next time you went to confession that you intentionally did not reveal mortals sins that you knew you had committed, unless at the time you really did not know.

And, no, you are not scrupulous. You would be scrupulous if you went to confession every day and I do not think a priest would allow that.
