A recurrent idea came to me when I purchused a calander in the mall: with beautifully photographed pictures of an Amish family, I couldn’t help but think of the peaceful and Christian life they are enabled to live. Along with the Hasidic Jews, the Amish separate themselves from society as to live a life free from modern religious persecution from the media.

Is it possible to raise a Christian family with today’s spiritual restrictions? Children are unprotected from attacks outside the home and within. Teenagers are free to buy contraception and purchase abortions. Almost all know of the divorce rate. Does evidence show that the typical “domestic church” is able to withstand the storm?

Historically, Chistians did separate themselves from the secular world, as fleeing from societies of complete sinfulness is Biblically rooted. While I am not attracted to their actual faith, the Amish (along with Hasidic) culture of simplicity and strong family life is very appealing.

Bad idea. Since when are Christians supposed to look on others as “outsiders”?

I grew up with amish, quakers, and mennonites. My fundieX upbringing has abit mennonite and quaker in it. To your question yes and no.

All Faith must be tested and tempered in some form. Otherwise it will not survive the world. I have systematically seen family memembers and children of other parish members just go off the deep end when they went on there own. They were so sheltered and givin a life of boredom, that temptation was just to great. The only families who did stay in the religion were farmers, which if anyone worked on on a farm no there is little to no boredom there.

I think this and the amish Rumspringa allows ones to stay strong in there faith. Also they do allow electricity in certain situations.

And yes I think it is very possible if not more so then before. It gives us a chance to show how evil the world is. I also think some of the best work of the Church was during its early years of persacution. We are blessed when we are persecuted and hated.

The Caritas Community is a Catholic enclave here in Alabama. Single women live on one end of the compound, single men live on the other, families live in the middle. By common agreement, television is not allowed; the children are homeschooled through high school.

The community has a gift shop and a printing plant; the “Friend of Medjugorie” books (like “How to Change Your Husband”) and various religious posters and books are printed there.

One of the Medjugorie visionaries stayed there while preparing to donate a kidney to his (her?) sibling; while there, Our Lady appeared to the visionary at the time she would normally appear in Medjugorie. A shrine has been erected there to commemorate the event, and a “Stations of the Cross” trail has been instituted nearby.

The Amish have nothing on us!

being amish, might not be the way to go, but many things can be learned from them. 2 months ago, about 50 milesnorth of me a propane tank blew up a house that a amish family lives in, to complicate things the mother of the family mother was with child and near due. she was in the house at the time. she and baby are still in intesive care at a hospital where I live. from miles around the amish community got togther a built up a new house for the family in a matter of 4 weeks. from outside their community 100,000s of dollars have been raised to pay their hospital bill. I will never join the ranks ofthe amish of live their lifestyle. But I say God bless them, because they do set a good example for many souls lost in the modern world.
