A DVD Jacket: What do you think of this?

The other day, we were shopping in Target… and I saw an old favorite film (dvd form) on the stand for $5.50. The film is “The Trouble with Angels” (Hayley Mills, Rosalind Russell). The film has a PG rating, and probably isn’t the best “fare” for young kids, because it features students, smoking and being disobedient in a Catholic school, taught by nuns (for anyone who has NOT seen it… the main character DOES clean up her act in the end).

I hesitated… a bit, before buying it… because the artwork on the dvd jacket kind of baffled me. It shows one of the nuns, holding what appears to be a shotgun or rifle. See the link…

Well… it angered me, because NO WHERE in the film… do ANY of the nuns wield firearms!

What do you think of this? Just another lame attempt to make Catholics look bad?

It could be a still photo taken from a scene that was ultimately cut from the movie. You never know.

But I agree - if it’s not relevant, and doesn’t fit with what the final cut ended up to be, then don’t use that image.

Sad that they had to choose THAT one for the dvd cover.

I’m not sure if it is a gun or an umbrella or something else. The drawing of the nun below the right hand adds to the impression that it is a gun a bit. The nun looks like the band leader but it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the movie. There’s also a picture on the back and on the DVD itself of Rosalind Russell riding a bike that I don’t remember from the movie either. You’ve just given me a good reason to look at it again.

It’s one of my all time favorites. Some of the filming was done at a building belonging to the order of nuns that taught at my high school. In fact, I was just at the site a few years ago. It was great!

You’re correct, “Revert”… the nun pictured on the dvd jacket IS the “bandleader nun”. And in the film, she DID carry a baton… in one scene. But it looked nothing like what she’s holding on the dvd jacket. Any one who has ever handled a rifle… that is very similar to the position of the nuns hands.

Yes, and I also found quite strange the picture of Rosalind Russell on a bike since that was also NOT in the film.

Liza makes a good point (above) about the possibility of those being “cut” scenes. But also, why put them on the jacket… if they’re not contained in the film?

Movie publicity material (posters, video/DVD cover art, et cetera) more often than not comes from production stills and …well… publicity shots than from the film itself.

It has been too long since I have seen the movie to speculate at what sister might be holding – Maybe it is a nun-strength knuckle-rapping stick? Or a light saber?

And I would not worry too much about the PG rating either. I would not be surprised if it was for the scenes of the girls shopping for brassieres, and the “scandalously” short borrowed band uniforms rather than for smoking. (But who knows? The movie’s original release pre-dates the MPAA ratings system?)

In any case, the USCCB rates the movie A-I, and I give the movie two

I should have known that others on CAF would love this movie as much as me!! DH is a huge film buff and did a minor in film, and I generally don’t like either movies or TV (no attention for moving pictures). But I LOVE this movie! I picked up the sequel at Office depot (go figure) earlier this week… totally need to watch it tonight!

That certainly is an odd picture. It doesn’t really tell you much about the movie, does it. Not just the nun with a “gun,” but the whole composition of the DVD cover is…weird.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen that movie but I remember it being very cute. My mom likes it since it reminds her of her Catholic boarding school days.

Do nuns carry rifles. Not usually, however, many years ago the Boy Scout council for which I worked invited teaching nuns for a day’s visit to our camp.
In addition to serving a great lunch and a very short welcome speech, the Sisters were given a chance to try their hands at some of the activities.
After one had me almost doubled over laughing with her comment on groups of habits looking like flocks of penguins, some tried their hands with the .22 rifles. One of the Sisters was quite a marksman (markswoman?); she explained that she had grown up in farm country with her brothers and had learned by shooting “varmits”.
Nuns, even before the “Spirit of V2”, were adept at a lot of surprising things beyond the classroom or hospital. I saw nuns with skis in the Alps.
