So i always thought i was a good Catholic until not too long ago. Once i hit 8th grade it started to go downhill (in my mind). When i used to see girls as people and truly respect them, now i have lost some of that (AND I WANT TO GET IT BACK). I know i haven’t been myself at all. Will someone help me with this?
Second, ever since 9th grade (im just entering 10th) i have been watching horror movies. I like the bro bonding when you watch them with friends. When i saw paranormal activity i got very paranoid. I started to think stuff would happen to me like in the movie. Should i not watch these movies? What is the Catholic view on them?
Third, I cant stop having bad thoughts. Like i believe in Christ and go to Mass 95% of the time but i just cant seem to get these thoughts out of my head. Should i talk to a Priest?
Please help and God Bless all.🙂

First, welcome to the Forums! 👍

I’m 16 and know exactly how you feel.

By the way, I’m going to assume that by ‘bad thoughts’ you mean thoughts of a sexual nature.

When it comes to these thoughts, if you make them happen on purpose or if you act on them by committing impure acts with yourself than that is defiantly causing your issue in regards to viewing girls with respect. Not only that, but stirring up sexual thoughts and committing impure acts with yourself is sinful. If you are doing these things currently, stop. You will notice that despite some sufferings, your life and your outlook on girls will be greatly improved.

When it comes to horror movies, they may or may not be sinful. If you’re watching them because they’re just entertaining, than they’re not sinful. If you’re watching them to get pleasure out other people’s suffering, then I would say that they are sinful.

Why are you missing Mass occasionally? If it’s because sometimes you just don’t want to go, please stop doing that. We all need the Eucharist more than we could possibly know.

If I were you, I would thoroughly look through an examination of conscience to discern if I have sinned. A good one is here. If you have committed any grave sins with full knowledge that it was sinful and consent of the will, than absolutely to to Confession and don’t receive Holy Communion until you do so.

All of this might seem demanding, but that doesn’t make it bad. It will help you.

May God bless you and have a great school year! Sophomore year is so much better than Freshman year.

And once again, welcome to the Forums!

P.S. Don’t be surprised if the this thread gets moved to ‘Catholic Living’ or ‘Moral Theology.’ You’re a new member and so you shouldn’t be faulted for not knowing, but this kind of question usually goes there.

Pray the rosary. Every Day. I didn’t start until I was older, and wish I would have my whole life. It doesn’t take very long at all, and you will see very real blessings in your life. Stick with it for a month, and after that it will be a part of your day you look forward to.

Be careful how you spend time with girls. Custody of your eyes and your thoughts is something that takes discipline and effort. The best advice is to as much as possible avoid situations where you are tempted to lust, because it is a very difficult temptation to overcome. So remove yourself from the situation as much as you possibly can.

As far as the movies, I would stop watching them. It’s not just about engaging in occult activity- “scary” movies are often filled with young people thinking about, talking about, or engaging in sex- exactly the other issue you said you are struggling with. Unless you are watching “Classic” horror movies without any of that kind of thing, I would definitely cut this out.

Frequent the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist. Don’t wait for a mortal sin to go to confession. My advice is go as much as you can. Do you wait to take care of your car until it is broken down or just about to? No. You fill up the gass, change the oil, check the tires etc on a regular basis in order to PREVENT major problems. It’s the same thing with your soul. Here’s a possible spiritual maintenance schedule:

Daily: Morning Prayers, Evening Prayers, Grace x3, Rosary, Angelus x2
Weekly: Penance, Mass

Vices grow through habit. Virtues grow through habit as well. When you start something it’s hard, but as you keep at it, it will get easier to keep going and harder to turn back. Get working on building up the virtues.

I’m a 54-year-old wife and mother of two grown daughters. I have young nephews and nieces.

You’re a boy growing up into a man. This is the time of your life when you’re supposed to be maturing sexually, and this means you WILL get aroused whenever you see a girl.

My husband tells me that when he was your age, he could get aroused by just thinking about any part of a girl, not just the “naughty parts.” In fact, he said he would get aroused thinking about his grandma’s breasts!

That’s the way God makes males. It’s normal.

Eventually everything will slow down for you and become less intense and you’ll feel more in control of yourself and be able to be around girls without getting aroused.

But right now, you’re a seething cauldron of hormones, and frankly, I don’t think it matters if you say Rosaries every day–the instant you see a girl, even statues of Catholic female saints, you will experience the same thing because it’s normal. Just keep saying, “This is the way God made me and all other males in the world. I am growing up into a man.”

It might comfort you to know that girls go through the same thing, only in different ways. Also, many girls go through all these hormonal upheavals when they’re young, as young as 10 years old, although most experience it when they are around 12-14 years old. Often girls are “ahead” of boys, and this means that to boys, the girls seem mature and exciting. But don’t be fooled–even though their bodies are closer to being mature, most girls still have a ways to go in their minds before they are completely grown up.

It’s really hard to grow up! Don’t be so tough on yourself. Don’t see sin where there is just hormones. Relax and wait for nature, which God is the Author of, to finish its business with you.

As for the horror movies, I would say that this is part of the growing up process for boys, too. Males are often required to face some terrifying things when they grow up. Many young men join the military (or in the past, have been drafted into the military), and you will see horrors in war settings. Also, men are generally expected to be the “brave one” in a couple, and not only kill the spiders in the house, but defend your wife and children when there is danger.

Maybe this role has been decreased in modern times, as women are now expected to do all of these things. But for the most part, it is the men who protect women, not the other way around. That’s the way God made us all.

I think that the horror movies were and probably still are one way that boys prepare themselves to deal with real-life horrors. While watching a horror movie, a boy learns that yes, he can deal with something scary and yes, he will survive. This experience gives you confidence and helps you not to be terrified of the future, when you might be expected to step up and do something very scary and very brave.

Be careful about the type of horror movie. The classic horror movie is one in which GOOD wins out in the end. I think that these kinds of horror movies are fine for Catholics and any Christians, as long as they don’t terrify you to the point where you withdraw from real life. (Some people are like that–my older daughter has always refused to watch horror movies because she can’t stop thinking about them afterwards and then she gets too scared to do anything.).

The horror movies to avoid are those in which there is no evidence that “Good” wins out in the end. E.g., when I was a teenager, Rosemary’s Baby came out, and it’s still a popular classic horror movie among fans The problem with this movie is that there is no good that wins in the end–it’s all evil. Evil reigns.

I would say to avoid these types of movies. Most horror movies have a battle between good and evil, and good wins. Good may experience a lot of grisly deaths while winning, but inevitably, the last man (or girl) standing is the GOOD man (or good girl). Stick with those kind of horror movies.

I haven’t seen too many horror movies in recent years, although when I was a teenager, I went to many horror movies. The only one that I have seen recently is a grisly little piece of fluff called Autopsy–I bought it because my favorite actor (Robert Patrick) stars in it. It’s a typical teen horror movie–a group of teenagers ends up at a deserted hospital, and all of them are killed off in various icky ways so that they can provide organs for the wife of the mad doctor who runs the hospital (that’s my actor’s character). It’s billed as “the grossest movie ever made.” I would disagree, since I work in a hospital and I see body parts when they are brought down from surgery to the lab. But it is basically pretty gross.

However, in the end, good wins out. I won’t say what happens just in case you decide to look up this movie and watch it. But good does win out and evil is stopped. So in spite of the grossness of the movie, I would say it’s OK for teens to watch. In fact, I predict that it wlil be seen at a lot of teenager summer camps on “movie nights.”

Now should you be watching “better” movies? Yes, definitely. I think that you should try really hard to get interested in the more intellectual movies and the more mainstream films that win Oscars and other awards. There are plenty of movies that the Catholic bishops rate as “good films” for Catholics to watch. Perhaps you can work on becoming a “film fan,” and work on developing an expertise on the really good movies, so that other people in your school, including the adults, will come to you for advice about which films are worth seeing, which will win the Oscars, etc. I know some teenagers who know as much about films as the producers and critics! And some of the teens I know have grown up to become film writers, filmmakers, producers, directors, etc.

E.g., look up Shawn Ryan. Years ago, he was a kid in my daughters’ school. He became involved in the local theater (stage) in our city, and became friends with one of the older actors, who mentored him through screen play writing. Now Shawn is known in Hollywood as one of the best writers around. He wrote the series, “The Shield,” and also the series, “The Unit.”

Good luck to you and have fun being a teen. It goes fast, honest.

I would say lots of prayer and yes, do talk to a priest. I think he will be a big help. I also think that you will realize that you are not really any different from other teenagers. It has been a few decades since I’ve been a teenage boy, but believe me, we all go through the same temptations and have since time began. A big plus is you have the help of the people on the forum here. For many of us here, as teenagers the internet did not exist, so we had to get the help face to face. Face to face can be good, but sometimes it’s easier to be anonymous. Apart form all of the negativity the internet has to offer, CAF is a light in the darkness. Again I say yes, talk to a priest.

Thank you everyone who took the time to reply, I think I know what to do now.😃

Nate,
Please change your profile’s entry for “religion” so that it does not give your e-mail address. Go to “Profile,” “Control Panel,” “Edit your Details.”

Your e-mail address should remain private. You don’t want to be put on spam lists or worse, especially considering your subject matter.

People can contact you safely through the CAF internal message system. And if anyone bothers you, you can put them on an ignore list. I tried to contact you privately through the message system to tell you about this.

Go to “Profile” “private messages.” Or, on every page, at the top, there is a box which says, “Welcome,” with your name. To the right it says “Messages: # New, Total #.” This is how you know if you have any messages. Click on “Messages.”

I hope this helps! 🙂

As for the horror movie part, I would try to stay away from the sacrilegious ones. Since it is considered sinful to use tarrot cards or ouija boards or any other non-God-related way to acquire knowledge, I personally avoid movies involving this stuff. They just creep me out and then I start thinking about that stuff too much.

Good luck!

P.S. There’s this one horror movie that you might like. It doesn’t involve any of this anti-God stuff. It’s called the Sixth Sense. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s only rated PG-13 too! The ending is superb! Have you seen it before?
