I’ve got a friend whos feeling a seperation with God. He doesn’t even feel right saying ‘God.’ Any advice on how to get him back?

There is an old saying, “If you feel that you are separate from God, who moved?” The answer of course is that God never moves, but continues to love us. A spiritual retreat is very good for this. I am partial to the Franciscans, but other Orders also offer retreats. Even the most faithful people need to have a spiritual-battery recharge once in a while. All clergy and religious are required to have periodic retreats.

Is he Catholic?

Is he going through a rough period, but maybe not so far gone he is willing to talk to a priest about his feelings?

Most believers experience doubt at some point or another and often dismiss it. But when dwelling, it is important to dig out the reason for the doubt. There is something there that doesn’t allow the person to have faith. Sometimes, there is some sin bottled up that needs to come out before the grace of faith is restored. Remember, the Holy Spirit won’t live an an unclean house.

Other times it can be because the person was hurt by something said or done - possibly by religious or priests.

A good question to ask is “why”.

The most important thing here is that you sure seem like a real friend for even being concerned about your friend. Friends are friends even in the hardest times in life, not only when all is a field of roses. Some idiot other type of “friend” who has a false sense of Christianity may turn their back on a friend when that friend has a spiritual crisis and falls for a while. This as St. John of the Cross states in one of his works: “is due to a immature expectation of the faith of the beginner.” However, you are the opposite, you were and are a real friend. You are doing here what Christ would do. By the way shows much humbleness and humility on your part.
