Would somebody be kind enough to create, or at least know of, a graphic that shows how one should be when receiving Holy Communion on the tongue? As in, where your tongue should be and how you tilt your head?

I’ve had people attempt to explain it to me, though it seems confusing trying to imagine how it should be.

Like this 😛

LOL, but seriously…there’s no certain way to do it.

I know this’ll sound silly, but my wife was worried about how to receive on the tongue when she converted to Catholicism; so we practiced with Necco wafers. 😃

That doesn’t sound silly at all - I’m sure that in times past children were required to practice (or at least watch others) before receiving their first Holy Communion. Before doing anything important for the first time, we practice - and what could be more important?

I’m sorry that I resurrected this old thread.

However, I did NOT want to start a thread with this question.:o

When sticking out the tongue, is it it tongue down kind of like over your lips or tongue straight out like a “nah nah nah nah”?

Or is it like the first picture. Not really sticking out your tongue at all - just opening your mouth and dropping your jaw?

LOL, I feel silly.

TrueLight, you must stick your tongue out of your mouth. The priest isn’t going to stick the Blessed Sacrament into your oral cavity. 🙂 You must give Him a … sigh… landing pad of some sort. Since the accidents of bread are adhesive to our tongues, you merely retract your tongue and begin munching as He instructed us to in John 6. I was very nervous about it at first, but now it comes naturally. 😃

LOL, you made me laugh.

Okay I think I get it. It’s like in the third picture with the woman in black.

I just practiced in front of the mirror. Not pretty at all. But that could be cause I’m squinting trying to see what it looks like with my eyes closed. 😃

Adore the host, open as wide as comfortable and extend your tongue. And, give the priest time to release the host before you retract your tongue.

Use a mirror for practice if you are worried what you look like.

LOL, I am actually being silly regarding what I look like. The later it gets the sillier I get.

But I’m more concerned I won’t have it out far enough or I won’t open my mouth wide enough and that the Priest will say, “stick out your tongue”!

The deacon who was helping with RCIA at my school (Catholic universities ftw!) gave us some basic instructions for receiving on the tongue:

First, stick your tongue OUT! No one is going to think you look silly!
Second, WAIT until the Priest/Deacon/EMHC has withdrawn his (or her, in the case of EMHCs) hand before you bring your tongue back into your mouth. They don’t want to touch your tongue and the Host isn’t going to run away!

Haha, I hope this helps.

LOL yes it does.

Like this, but with your head back?

Dont feel silly. Its a serious question for a lot of folks.
From my own experience, its easier to have the tongue out so that its against the lower lip, and out far enough to curl down past the lower lip.
If the tongue is straight out, it seems to vibrate! 😊

Different priests have different techniques: some “slap” the Host on the tongue; while others place It on so that it feels like a feather landing on the tongue (a beautiful feeling for those of us who have our eyes closed!). The against-the-lower-lip-and-curled-down “method” seems to work OK for either (or any other) type of priest.

Regarding tilting your head back: it depends on whether youre tall or short, standing or kneeling, whether the priest is tall or short. Theres a number of possible combinations!
A tall person standing, and recieving from a short priest… it`d be easier for both parties for the Comunicant to kneel.

PS
Beaten (just) by a heap of others! 😊 but maybe it should be left here…

Like Einstein in the post above, Fink?

Imagine opening your mouth to take a bite of a big fat Subway sandwich. Then imagine licking an ice cream cone.

For Communion, you only have to open half as wide and stick your tongue out half as far 🙂

Hmm good analogy. I just did it in the mirror and I think I have enough of a “landing pad”, as GloriousOrder put it for the host to rest.

Right on!
Its a pity he wasnt a Catholic! 😃

You replied a bit too soon: i added a bit!
When dealing with procrastinators and bumblers like yours untruly, it`s best to wait until the 20 minute edit time has expired. 😊

Seriously: some priests are NOT good at giving Communion on the tongue; and need to do some practising, themselves. A priest not far from here even tried to ban COTT. An attitude like that doesn`t help such a very personal and sensitive issue. Feeling fear when approaching a priest is… It should be a time of joyful expectation.

OK, now you folks are getting silly. Go find something else to do. 🙂
