At your church at Mass has a hymn been divided?
Some verses may be used at the Entrance Hymn. Other verses may be sung at the Offertory Hymn.

My parish has never done this. I guess it’s a good idea if you want to be able to sing a rather lengthy hymn in its entirety. “All Creatures of Our God and King” comes to mind.

I cannot recall this ever happening at a regular Sunday Mass*, but frequently at daily Masses.

(* Maaaaayyyybbee on a retreat or two with limited music ministry?)

A former pastor was fond of singing Haugen’s “Canticle of the Sun” as both entrance hymn and recessional. 3 verses coming in and 3 verses going out. Usually on Saturdays or Sundays when we didn’t have a choir.

Sure. I have done this on occasion, and always because some hymn strikes me as particular appropriate to the day, as well as apt for both entrance and exit. “For All the Saints” comes to mind.

As the music director, I’ve made this choice a few times. Generally, the song has a lot of verses and most or all of them are really good. When I do, I make sure to tell the priest that I haven’t put up the wrong numbers on the board…

At the church here on The Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, January 1st, we sang Verses 1 and 2 of Angels We Have Heard on High for the Entrance Hymn.
For the Recessional Hymn we sang Verses 3 and 4 of Angels We Have Heard on High.

Agreed, but not very often. There are too many songs out there that can fulfill the “theme” of any given mass.

Our parish just did that on the Fourth Sunday of Advent, with O Come O Come Emmanuel. Since that hymn is the O Antiphons, it’s most appropriate starting on the 17th of December so we waited until the 20th to do it and we did two verses for the opening hymn and two for closing.

Ironically, that is, as I can recall, the only song I did as you say also for Advent years ago.
