HOLD YOUR CHAIRS - RED FLAG THREAD !!! :o

Somewhere nearer than Milton Keynes (long story) there may be a lady that wants companionable marriage and isn’t cowed by any thought that it is grievously against God’s rules.

As an Asperger I dislike physical intimacy and certain acquaintances have observed that a companionable marriage may be what I myself need to pray for. I always assumed it was a non-starter because it has been drummed into me that all ladies are “demanding”.

I don’t need anyone’s go-ahead to start praying but it would be nice to give anyone the opportunity to be friendly about the fact that I want to pray for what I want in life and what another person may after all want as well. United we two could be a strong team to help other friends, outsiders etc.

I am now 60 and it would be reasonable to expect that Mrs Right could be near that age bracket as well.

If I go ahead and pray about this at least God can block it through circumstances.

Whether this idea goes ahead or not, I shall be seeking extra friends anyway because everybody needs more of those. I shall also be deepening my knowledge of the faith the while.

I’m not interested in being told by anyone that this is grievously against God’s rules, please.

By companionable marriage, do you mean one that does not include any sexual intimacy? There actually is a traditional practice in the Church called a Josephite marriage, in which both parties in the marriage mutually agree to sacrifice sexual relations in order to help one another better reach God. Mary and Joseph had such a marriage, in that they never consummated it. Blesseds Louis and Zelie Martin practiced a Josephite marriage before a confessor advised them to come together (they subsequently conceived and raised St. Therese, whose feast day was yesterday). You might consider reading up about it.

In order for two people to validly marry, however, they have to be able to consummate the marriage, because through their vows, they exchange the right to sexual intimacy with their spouse. A person can not give what he does not possess, so if the person in question was impotent, he would not be able to marry validly. This also means that either spouse in a Josephite marriage has the right to request normal marital relations if she or he later changes his mind, and the other spouse should oblige.

In sum, there is nothing inherently sinful or contrary to Church teaching about a marriage that sacrifices sex, so long as the parties are capable of exchanging this right during their vows.

I think praying about this is a wonderful idea. Like they say, there’s a lid for every pot! 🙂

Phew.

I’ll get praying as well as carrying on doing all the other things I listed.

I like the pot and lid metaphor!
