Funny story from a harp lesson a few weeks ago. We were discussing recital attire.

I’m the teacher. I teach in my dining room. We’re sitting at the dining table at the moment. I keep a book of St. Francis de Sales readings on that table for convenient reading; it has a grainy daguerreotype of the Saint on the cover, in his very buttoned-up but centuries-outdated dress.

Me: Basically, you need to dress modestly.
Student: What is modestly?
M: Well, the broad definition is that you don’t want to dress in a way that draws undue attention to yourself.
S: [looking at the book cover] So if that man walked in here right now, he’d be immodest?
M: [startled] [laughing] Yes! Yes, if St. Francis de Sales walked in here like that right now, he’d be immodest! You’ve got it.

This is the youngest student I’ve ever taught. I enjoy her. 😃

But if you’re dressed modestly, in an immodest social environment you would also attract attention to yourself. So then what should you do? Strip yourself to fit the context?

The girl took the words I spoke to her and immediately applied them in a technically correct but surprising way. This is simply a funny story. No deep meaning here, no prescriptives. Just funny.

I have a hard time seeing how that would happen? I don’t think it’s possible for the entire customary dress of a society to be immodest in that society.

Ok then. It was a honest question but …whatever.
Bad Mondays huh.

A few weeks ago I was trying to find a gift for my husband’s confirmation. I was sitting there in dread, asking Jesus if I ought to be asking Him to give Husband something that would make him very happy but would be a nightmare for me… and, like, three minutes later I found this absolutely hysterical gift that was so perfect it blew me away. IT WAS SO FUNNY, and so, so perfect. Ok Jesus, so I’m gonna take it easy on this one.

The moral of the story: A ten-year-old girl said something funny. Just giggle. And have a happy Monday. :hugs:
