a little confused

hey. no worries, i dont doubt any role of our sacred mother, mary, but i was wondering if you could just clear up a passage for me.why in mark 4: 21 does the word make reference to Jesus’s family believing he was crazy? "When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind”. why would they have done this? mary, joseph, and elizabeth all had first hand witness accounts that Jesus was from God, was special, and would be the savoir. why would they believe he was crazy? any help will be greatly appriciated!!!
 
Offhand, I would say that “relatives” could

mean a lot of different people. Mary wouldn’t
have told people that her Son was Messiah…it wasn’t
her role.
“It is not yet My time…” said her Son.

For those of His realtives who thought of Him as
a cousin, say, all they could “see” was one of
their family members acting in a way that for
them-as Orthodox Jews-would have seemed
mightily strange behavior.

That verse always seemed to me
to reveal the difficulty Jesus had with
bringing the Good News. He also said:
A prophet is never accepted in His own town.

Does this shed any light, I hope?

The verse is from Mark 3:21. Like reen12 I think it meant that the family was unbelieving. There are similar episodes throughout the gospels where people wanted to stone Him.

I’m not clear on what you’re saying.
Are you OK with my response?

The gospels don’t tell us if Joseph and Elizabeth
were still living when Jesus reached the age of 30.

I think it’s safe to assume that Joseph had
already died, and the point is also made that
Elizabeth gave birth to John the Baptist at what
would have been considered advanced age…and
this event in the gospel of Mark would have been
written over 30 years after Elizabeth gave birth,
so it’s unlikely that she would still have been
living when Jesus began His ministry.

Since, at age 12, He went to Nazareth and was
subject to them, I take it that Jesus worked with
Joseph to help provide a living for the holy family,
and then began His ministry at the age of 30.
He made a point of telling His mother, at the
wedding at Cana, that His time had not yet come.
So, why would his relatives have had any idea
that He was the Messiah?

Hope I’ve made things clearer and not more
murky!🙂 What do you think?

hey reen yeah that does make sense, thank all of you for your responses. i knew there was a logical explanation, and mary most likely being the only one from his early life still alive, consequently the passage referring to OTHER relatives never before mentioned, does make sense. thank you! 🙂

PS: I just thought of something. Even his cousin,
John the Baptist, sent his disciples to Jesus to
ask: “Are you the one expected?” So even John
the Baptist had to ask Him.
 
I look at it like this: I am an only child, but I have more than 50 first cousins…
Well, Jesus no doubt had more than that…And there is no doubt that there were a lot who did not believe in Him…so they would maybe think He was crazy.
Or they might be just saying that, too, if they wanted to protect Him from the Pharisees or whomever…You know, like “Oh, pay no attention”…if that makes sense.

Mark 4:21 “He said to them, ‘Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand?’”

Instead of saying “unbelieving” I probably should have said “did not understand”. As far as “family” is concerned the verse does not name names and from my perspective is not relevant. The point for me is that people had trouble believing in and understanding Jesus.
 
Luke 2: 50 shows that “understanding” took time and development even for Mary.

I think it is obvious that the term family is not refering to Mary, Joseph and Elizabeth. I suspect it is referring to his freinds and neighbors where He grew up.

Jesus did not really reveal Himself as the Son of God to society until the wedding of Canna. He was about 30 years old. If the kid who grew up next door to you for 30 years came over and for the first time said, “I am the Son of God, the long awaited Messiah”, what would you say? You would probubly say, “He is out of his mind”.

There is a verse where Jesus states “physician heal thy self”. Jesus could not convert (heal) the people of area where He grew up. They knew Him to well as just another normal neighborhood kid to now think of Him as the Son of God.
