We have families that drive 45-90 minutes each Sunday to attend Divine Liturgy:D
Except for our one resident I doubt anyone in my parish commutes less than 30 minutes including the priest who comes further. My own commute is about 40 mins if there is no traffic and I’m not giving someone a ride, both of which usually happen and make it closer to an hour. Then there is the search for parking, which is another 10+ minutes. And the $5 bridge toll… Often one of us from the other side of the bay is happily driving an elderly member, I’m doing the trip home tomorrow, and that adds another 40 minutes onto the trip.

I’m just hugely grateful to have a Byzantine parish at all 😃 and that I’m still able to drive since neither the ECC nor Orthodox parish I go to is accessible by public transit from my house.

My bad for presuming folks would know that SC ain’t exactly a hotbed of Roman Catholicism, much less Eastern Catholicism.
OK, yeah, but that’s not a big revelation. I’ve known that for more than half a century  and it was going on l-o-n-g before that. But even so, while the existence of any Eastern/Oriental mission (or, for that matter, any RCC church) might elicit smirks or guffaws in that neck of the woods, it doesn’t seem to me to be something to laugh at or about in this forum.

Glory to God for all things! Thanks for this clarification. Prayers for this dedicated and industrious community! 👍

I have been several times to the maronite church in greenville. The people there are very nice and Fr. Bart is a great priest.

The website even includes a fascinating history of the Lebanese in South Carolina.

I think the point of this post is either that the Lord works in mysterious ways or sometimes you find something where you would least expect it.

I got it right away, at the thread title! 😃 Eastern Catholicism is pretty spotty, geographically. I do live in a hotbed here, with lots of churches in close driving distance.👍

It is a wonderful church that attracts Catholics and non-Catholics alike that wish to hear a service performed in Aramaic. SC is not as bad as you think, and I am quite offended that that these kinds of posts have a place in this type of forum…maybe this is not the place for me…

I beg to differ! I moved here, because this area has a very devout Catholic community. Steve Wood moved his ministry here a few years ago as well. The parish, St. Mary’s, that hosts this Maronite community is beautiful & the priest is fantastic. They have the high Mass every Sunday. There is also another parish nearby that has the Tridentine Mass.

Good to hear that!

But, give him a break, South Carolina is ranked 43 (the last US rank) with 7% Catholics, among these states: Alaska, Utah, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Rhode Island has 63%.

And if I may add, we have some very, very orthodox priests here, such as Fr. Cooper @ St. Elizabeth’s.
