Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, so I am not surprised by his use of inflaming language to force his way into the public domain.
I don’t agree with his anti-gay stand, but, since I come from a religious tradition that doesn’t believe in sin, nor in inherited faith, it would make my views a bit different from others here.
I also have to wonder if homosexuality isn’t just Phelps’ cause du jour. If this were 60 or 70 years ago, when gays were still quite hidden in our society, I believe he would have chosen another subject to build his reputation upon, such as interracial marriage.
In the 1950s and 60s, that would have been a taboo subject and people used the Bible to justify keeping different races out of the marriage bed.
Or he might have climbed on the anti-communist bandwagon during the Red Scare.
I think he is nothing more than an opportunist who has managed to get a few people, mostly his own family, to believe his outlandish stands and statements.
Peace,
