ok, so last night i was hanging out with my girlfriend and got carried away. i reached in her shirt and touched her boobs a couple times. i was wondering if i was in mortal sin. i have always been so confused in this area. i know what the catholic church teaches about the difference between mortal and venial sin and i am still so lost as to what degree my sin was. i really need a clear answer on this becasue i plan on recieving communion soon and i need to know if i am allowed to or not. thx God bless. 🙂

The short answer is probably not.

In order for a sin to be mortal, it must be

  1. *]made with full consent of the will
    *]be of grave matter
*]done with knowledge that the action is wrong

I’m guessing that you are somewhere in the teenage years, possibly a bit older. The fact that you are concerned about it tells me that you may meet all the conditions, but it is really hard to say. There is a certain maturity level that comes along with these actions that is usually not met into mid-late 20’s (generally speaking).

If it were me, I would see if I could find a priest shortly before Mass. I’ve stopped them in the hall way before (not the best solution, but if you are really concerned, no priest would refuse you if there is adequate time and corner you can duck into). If that doesn’t work, just don’t receive. Step out for some reason (headache, need to use the restroom, etc) if you are concerned about parents and the like. Or go up and receive a blessing.

All that being said, talk to your priest and see. It is always better to be safe than sorry in these areas. I’ll add you to my prayer intentions.

A good rule of thumb is if you don’t know if it was a mortal sin then it probably was not. What you do know is that you crossed the line and that any sexual activity before marriage is sinful. Your possible lack of full knowledge and complete consent may reduce your culpability. When you said that you got “carried away” that could have had an affect on your full consent. Anyway, you would know that better than anyone here. Take it to confession and as far as receiving Communion I would abstain until after confession. I alway err on the side of caution but ultimately it is your choice since you know if you decided to completely reject God in your action.

I was probably no help in giving you a direct answer but no one here will be able to since mortal sin is very hard to discern without knowing your heart. Go to confession when you can and stop that behavior since you do know that it is sinful even if venial. God bless you… teachccd

Actions such as you noted are only for the married…such would be in the area of grave matter for moral sin for one who is not married…

I suggest you bring this to confession.

If you are not sure you had full knowledge or full consent…say so.

This can help:

(though I would adjust under “pure intent”…that they are presuming here that he person had not yet consented…but upon realizing what was happening they ceased)

I would not say that this would be a valid observation…

You are taking a risk, of crossing a line, that you sound like you are NOT ready to cross. I would personally advise you to stop this behavior. Boobs are nice, but only in the confines of marriage. Save yourself a headache. The fruit tasted very good to Eve too. We all know how that ended up.

Let me ask YOU a question if I may…
Why do you wish to know whether it is a mortal sin or not?
What will you do with the information supplied here?

Peace
James
