I will copy and paste (I have her permission) the prayer request Bernadette posted on an australian parenting site I visit. It was posted in the spirituality section which is mainly frequented by protestants. they are lovely faith filled people but just don’t get the whole praying to saints thing. I pm’d her and suggested she come here and ask for prayers and she asked me to post for her. It seems to me that through her illness and her family Bernadette is on a journey of discovery, perhaps we should add to our prayer that she also find the whole truth!
*Hi This is a long story but please read through it as I need as many people as possible to pray for me. In April last year I was diagnosed with cancer. I was 14 weeks pregnant at the time and was told to terminate the pregnancy. I kept the baby and started chemotherapy. I am a non practicing catholic however I have always had a belief in God and Jesus and Heaven. My faith in God did start to dwindle a little however when I was diagnosed and going through treatment. My baby was born a healthy little girl at 33 weeks in August. I continued treatment until January when the tumour had shrunk to just scar tissue. In February a new aggressive tumour appeared near my heart and left lung. My survival rate was not looking good and I was advised to make sure I had an up to date will. At this point I lost my faith. Suddenly I realised I had a very real chance of dying and how could heaven be a wonderful place for me as I would not have my children with me and I love them both so much. I had one round of chemotherapy. When I had my second round of chemo we found out the chemo had had no effect on the tumour and it was in fact growing. I have just had a very high dose chemo regime that has not been used in Australia before. It wiped out my immune system and I had a stem cell transplant to bring my immune system back. My body had 3 infections and I was in ICU and nearly died. I am now about to have another high dose chemo and another stem cell transplant which will hopefully kill off all of the tumour. *
*Two weeks ago a friend and I were talking about God. Recently her gorgeous little 3 yr old son drowned. She was also a non practicing catholic. She said she knew God existed but she was just mad at him for taking away her little boy. She had been to a psychic and her little boy told her not to give away his toys as he was going to come back to her as a baby boy in 2 years and then after that he will bring a sister. She knew her little boy was up in heaven and that in 2 years his soul would come back to her as a new little baby boy. *
I was amazed and all of a sudden I too felt that God did exist and that he has a plan for all of us even if it did not feel like it at the time. *
For months my family have been trying to tell me that the Catholic church is trying to make Catherine McAuley a saint. She needs to perform at least 3 miracles - she has already performed two. It turns out that I am one of the miracles they are praying for. If you could please pray to Catherine McAuley for me to be cured of my cancer I would really appreciate it. *

Loving God, you chose Catherine McAuley for the service of your peoplewho are poor, sick and uneducated. You inspired her to found the Sisters of Mercy so that these good works might endure. Give to each of us a portion of her compassionate spirit and an ardent desire to serve your suffering people. Bless all our undertakings and grant that union and charity may always thrive among us.Graciously hear our prayer for Catherine, and by granting the favours we ask through her intercession, hasten the day when her sanctity will be celebrated by all the church.Amen
Prayer for a Sick Person (that would be me!)
O beloved Catherine, through the power of my most compassionate Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, I humbly beseech you to look with love and pity on Bernadette who is ill at this time. Stir up in me the same passion that impelled you to respond to the needs of your time. Bless me with the sure knowledge of your presence and with a complete trust in your providence. Use once again your spirit of compassion and your ardent desire to alleviate suffering and to restore her to full health if it is God’s holy will. I ask this in the name of Jesus who lives and reigns with the Father in unity of the Holy Spirit. Amen
