Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! You have just directly contradicted Christ’s teaching here:I don’t know. What I will say is that I’m not worthy to judge where the Church is not.
So if the church at Antioch had rejected the Council of Jerusalem, they would be rejecting Christ, clearly cutting themselves off from Christ’s visible Church. Yet you say you don’t know. Okaaaaaaay.16Whoever listens to you listens to me. Whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”
Jesus founded one Church, correct? Therefore, there can only be one Church that has the authority to speak in His name. Ergo, if a church can be shown not to be that one Church that He founded, then we know the promise of the Holy Spirit to guide into all truth, was not given to that particular church. This does not mean that the Spirit is not guiding individual members of that particular church. But since the Spirit was not promised to more than one Church, only one Church is guaranteed not to teach error. When one makes a statement that, “…the Holy Spirit had not guided that Church into all truth, disqualifying her as Christ’s Church, or you are in the wrong.”, that sounds a lot like the Spirit failing to guide, unless I should understand this differently.
Again, I am not blaming the Spirit, nor is the Spirit deserting anyone. But the Spirit was only promised to one Church as a whole. Promised to individual Christians? Yes. But only to one visible Church. No, now you are again blaming the Spirit, unless you are claiming that the Spirit deserts believers because they believe something in error. The Catholic Church certainly doesn’t teach that, AFAIK.
It would mean that church was teaching error, disqualifying her from being Christ’s Church. Christ’s Church, whichever one it is, can NEVER officially teach error. If the Catholic Church has taught error, there is no reason for me to believe her when she says the bible is inspired. If she was wrong before, she could be wrong again. If the early Church was wrong about the number of sacraments ( certainly a tangent if we’re worried about tangential topics), that doesn’t mean He wasn’t guiding. It means they weren’t understanding the Spirit - through a mirror dimly, etc.
Many are willing to believe that Christ’s Church can teach error. They do this an excuse to not let their consciences be bound. They have granted to themselves the power to bind and loose.
Yes. But the Greek is clear that the power to bind and loose is given to them collectively, while it is given to Peter individually. Chrysostom points this out when he said:Yes. Do you agree that the power to bind and loose was later given to the rest, as well?
Can anything ever be loosed in Heaven that is fallible? What the other Apostles could do collectively, Peter could individually do.
