I have recently finished High School. Depression hit me hard these last two years, I failed some subjects this academic year although I have managed to start new studies at last. I will start living alone in a new city in a few weeks. It’s a big step and I still have many doubts and fears. I won’t be heading for college right now: I preferred send applications to different community colleges first and see what I like best.

I am somewhat of a socially awkward/anxious person, so I after reflecting on it I thought that, even if the city isn’t quite big, I could try doing some volunteering work and looking for a catholic youth group or a Eucharistic Adoration place. At least I will try to avoid my isolating tendencies this way.

I have been thinking about joining a local sport club too. I have considered martial arts. I has been interested about East Asia cultures for some time. I was especially fascinated by the unknown long history of hidden christians, Spanish and Portuguese missionaries and corageous martyrs. Long story.

The issue is, I know how eastern philosophy is tied with martial arts, and even if I am kind of vaccinated against people selling mystical or invisible powers, chakras, ki and universal forces, I don’t want to risk my spiritual safety for nothing of value. I am attracted to the responsability and self-discipline aspect (aside of working on my flaws, helping my mental health and meeting new people). The ones I think I have nearer are Jujitsu, Aikido and Taekwondo. I would gladly accept advice on the worth of taking martial arts or not and recommendations on other martial arts or martial sports.

Thank every one of you for taking the time of answering my post.

I took Taekwondo for a number of years and the focus was all on exercising, forms, sparring, self defense, etc. Nothing about eastern philosophy was ever presented. I suppose it just depends on what school you go to. It wouldn’t hurt to try out a couple and get a feel of what they teach. Most likely you will be fine. Enjoy!

Martial arts are fantastic! They’re great for your health and your self-esteem. I recommend three martial arts because they actually work in real life:

Boxing
Muay Thai
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Forget traditional martial arts. They don’t work in real life. The UFC has proven which martial arts are the best if you actually want to fight.

Go for it! This time next year you could be extremely fit, look great and have supreme self-confidence. You’re about to embark on some exciting times!

Thank you both. Where I am moving to is not a a big city (the goverment didn’t accept my application for studying in the capital, but it is not such a major problem at the moment), so I probably won’t find any Krav Maga or Muay Thai dojos. I will try to find a Jiu Jitsu or a Taekwondo one. Boxing would be too intense for me, I think.

Everyone is partial to their own martial art and thinks it is the best, but I am here to tell you that jiu jitsu (the traditional kind, not BJJ) is the best!

Thanks for your recommendation. It seems that jiu-jitsu is the preferred choice 😁
