Ugh.

New Age Neo-Gnosticism with just enough Christian Symbolism to attempt to lure believer away.

Also alot of sexual connotation in their celebrations (I refuse to call it what they did)

Peace be with you all,

Yep, I’ve got Eastern Orthodox friends that have fallen for this kind of thing. What are we to do?

Peace.

Wasn’t Aliester Crowley into the occult. I seem to recall a story about him summoning up Satan at some point in his life, only to be driven crazy by the experience.

I may be wrong or my information was wrong, that story just comes to mind.

The Ordo Templi Orientis is based on the Law of Thelema, which is an invention of Aleister Crowley. It is a gnostic corruption of Catholicism and Egyptian pantheism.

Peace be with you all,

Like I stated earlier, I have one particular friend who was very interested in this stuff (Golden Dawn, etc) and was lead astray from Eastern Orthodoxy. Can anyone offer me advice as to how one could refute some of this stuff, where to start and how one would build a case against it?

I’m kinda ole school Baptist turn Catholic RCIA type and frankly don’t have the occult knowledge to refute this kind of stuff.

Peace, Love and Blessings.

My suggestion would be to find some written material on Aleister Crowley and show it to your friend. I’ve read that his own mother called him “The Beast”, and he became the most infamous occultist of his era. He was a member of a satanic cult called Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. He was a user of drugs and practitioner of sexual magic.

Crowley used to preach the following: “Be strong, o man! Lust, enjoy all things of sense and rapture: fear not that any God shall deny thee for this.”

And also: “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.”

Adressing Heaven at a satanic ceremony he said this against Christ Himself: “Thine hour is come; as I blot thee out of this earth, so surely shall the eclipse pass; and Light, Life, Love and Liberty be once more the law of Earth. Give thou place to me, o Jesus; thine aeon is passed; the Age of Horus (an Egyptian demigod-half god, half man) is arisen by the Magic of the Master, the Great Beast.”

As Jesus taught us to judge the tree by its fruits, so we can judge the fruits by the tree, and the “tree” called Aleister “The Beast” Crowley is rotten to the core! I don’t know any sensible person who would want to eat “fruits” from a tree like that! 😦

Howdy,

The thing about Crowley is that he in fact does have quite a bit to teach, and it is possible to learn a lot from him. (His book on yoga is very accessible and understandable, for instance.) Of course, he also has many problems. One could refute Crowley from any number of perspectives: Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Taoist – since Crowley drew upon all of these sources and more. If your friend is generic New Age, then you may have a tougher time at refutation.
