The quote is:

Belief is not a matter of faith, it is a matter of conviction.

The source is from the new animated series, “Clone Wars”, on Cartoon Network.

It has some merit, but I don’t think one can completely remove faith from the equasion if one is talking about religious matters. How one defines “Belief”, “faith” and “conviction” are crucial as well.

Very secular statement. It proposes that one’s conviction is all that is required for belief. Faith becomes almost a burden in this proposition as it appears to be presented as the near opposite of conviction. So one’s belief is therefor completely self-generated by one’s own conviction with no influence of faith or even grace for that matter.

It’s gibberish in a fancy suit, which is all you can expect from George Lucas.

In fact, I’d go a step further: its just another example of the pop culture effort to cannonize ‘spirtuality’ while attacking ‘religion’. ‘Faith’ must be denigrated, because it might lead to [gasp!] church going or other outlandish, old fashioned behaviors. ‘Belief’ and ‘conviction’ are OK, because they are distinctly personal and not likely to intrude into the public sphere.

In simple english, faith is belief; and belief is faith.

Now, if he’d said something along the lines of ‘Faith is a matter of conviction [or choice], not emotion’, I’d be the first one to applaud.

True Faith is based on logical reasoning and our convictions come from that source. If faith contradicted sound reasoning then we’d be fools to believe.
By a process of reasoning we actually end up in the catholic church. The process would be something like: If X is proved to be true then the implication is that Y has to be such-n-such and this implies that Z must be so and so, which in turn means, and so on and so on untill the bottom line brings us to the catholic church.

True faith is based on logical reasoning? That’s a new one on me. I find it completely silly.

However, the quote is general enough that it can apply to any religious belief, so it need not be secular. And it does make sense too.

After all, what good is faith without conviction?

I’d have to agree. If faith is based on reason, in theory we wouldn’t need faith at all, because everything about theology could be logically explained.

Faith and reason compliment each other, methinks, is a better way of putting it.

Even our power of reasoning suffered a blow when mankind broke friendship with God, therefore we find many different conclusions being drawn from the same facts. This just doesn’t happen in religious matters but in nearly all scientific depts.
We usually through pride refuse to follow a logical process of reasoning when we see that this particular path could end up proving me wrong and mixed with our own predjudice its a wonder that we ever find the answer to anything.
I could recommend 2 books in particular to explain this point more clearly. The first book by C.S. Lewis entitled "Mere Christianity, and the second by the same author entitled “Miracles”

Conviction is certainly a part of it.

According to Hebrews 11:1, Christian faith or belief is a conviction, different from a conviction we may have about those things we can see and touch but a conviction nonetheless granted to us by the grace of God.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 NASB

The question of what is the nature of faith has been alive and discussed over beer at seminaries for some time. For my 2 cents worth…

Belief is the acceptance of something having being. I believe in electricity although I can not see it but use it every day. Faith is rooted in trust which goes several steps beyond simple belief. I can believe in electricity and in my telephone but I know that they are mechanical devices in current technology and when the wind blows strongly enough I really should not put my faith in them because they can go down.

My belief is in God because I have experienced Him in various ways. I can also have faith in Him because He is beyond the material world and so I can trust that He is always there, even when my senses let me down.
