I have a sweet friend who is Fundamentalist non-denominational. I know she has a neat love of the Lord, and is bringing her children up in a Christian household and school.
Just yesterday, she mentioned something that, in her words, “has been eating away at her for years” and if our group of friends would “judge her harshly or think badly of her” because she really felt the need to get it off her chest. She’s not elaborated to any of us in our circle of friends, but I can tell she’s extremely bothered by whatever it is. None of us has pressed her for details, and I told her that I would most certainly pray for her peace.
But if the opportunity arises, might I suggest to her that she go confess to a Priest? Even though she’s not Catholic, she might feel safer telling her secret under the inviolable seal of the confessional. (And who knows, maybe this could be the doorway through which she discovers the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.
)
However, I don’t want to suggest this to her if it might be a contradiction or in error (or whatever) to the Sacrament of Confession. She’s just obviously tremendously bothered by this, and hasn’t availed herself of counseling or anything (for fear, perhaps, of her “secret” getting out or something, I don’t know).
Your advice is most welcome.
