To the Original Poster: My wife and I came out of a non-denominational charismatic congregation also, and are attending a Catholic church on Saturday nights. We came out because of heretical extra-biblical teachings that so grieved us we could not stay. On the other hand, we have been shown unconditional love at Saints Peter and Paul. and the priest has even taken time out of his busy day to meet with us and answer questions we had. We also have parents that would resist our joining the Church: my father-in-law who is a Congregational Christian pastor, and my dad, who is a retired Assembly of God pastor. You have found a wonderful resource here, with folks who know not only Catholic doctrine, but Holy Scripture and are blessed with patience concerning pilgrims like us. Be blessed! 👍

Sounds like you are on your way! I also have come from independent Charismatic background and from what you have said in your story is that the churches you were with
are into the faith/wealth/ word of God false teaching. You can’t help your mom yet but do attend a Saturday mass or even a daily mass when possible. It sound like you are seeing through the false teaching of the name it claim it. That stuff is dangerous and I am glad to escape from it. That stuff destroys faith not build it up. The one adjustment was to get use to the liturgical form of worship which is very different that the free for all you are use to. The liturgy is spirit filled as well as Bible filled. The Catholic liturgy has more scripture in it than any protestant service. I now love walking into church now and not have chaos. It is wonderful to walk into the peace and stillness of the Catholic church. The liturgical service is rooted deep into history. Also the Catholic church is such great protection against all those so called “ministries” out there doing and saying whatever. Try to get ETWN when you can especially “The Journey Home”
God is calling you home!

The thinking around the statues, and attitude toward them is very sophisticated!
Yes, as you explore more the Church’s view on other topics I think you will find many of them that are like that. IMO, Catholicism is way more sophisticated and nuanced than protestant denominations. And really, why wouldn’t it be? It has a 2,000 year history and tradition that it builds on and draws from instead of attacking and dismantling. I would suggest that you get a catechism from the library or bookstore, they are not expensive. When I read the catechism I see that the everything the Church teaches is built on love, b/c God IS love.

God bless.

I apologize ahead of time for the length of this post.

Hello. I’m a born-again, Non denominational Christian, who needs some answers.

I have been fascinated with the Catholic church for most of my life, even going so far as to go into the local church as a teen to light a candle. I was raised in the Charismatic church, and my mother is a staunch believer in ever word they say. Right down to the, “you shouldn’t be poor or sick, unless you have no faith.” thing. My mom had married a Roman Catholic who cheated on her, and divorced her, so she’s never had a good view of them… Church was Never a big thing in my family, until my mom.

Lately I’ve been noticing a tremendous lack of respect for God in our church. It’s gotten so severe, that a woman my mom loves to watch on TV said we needed to “demand” that God answer our prayers because he “promised, so he owes us” (My now fifteen year old son pointed out that it was a VERY wrong thing to say!) Whereas I’m firm in the belief that everything is according to Gods will. Another point is our church allowing these two women to “take over” the place to present gifts, or prophesy, the whole nine yards. It’s internally frustrating to watch.

I read the bible every day, and cannot get enough of it! I know what it says, and have my own views. Come to find out many of the views are shared by the Catholic Church!

-I don’t believe women should be priests, or pastors.
-I don’t believe you should be rich.
-I believe we have to help the poor. (I actually saw one pastor preaching AGAINST the poor, calling them lazy! NEVER looked at him again)
-I believe you can lose your salvation if you follow the path of righteousness.
-There are others, I just can’t remember right now. XD

I always have this unsettled feeling in church. I sense an almost…chaotic way about it. There are no base rules to it all. I also have this unending sneaking suspicion that not everyone in there is genuine… I Know this is wrong of me, and have been trying to get rid of it.

My major problem is my very hard headed, elderly mother. She would have a heart attack if she knew of my fascination with Catholicism. I don’t know what to do. She lives on the same property as me, and wants me to take her to church. I feel so sad there….

I have the same concerns as any born-again would. The whole Mary thing, and the statues… But I read a very in-depth explanation at Catholicbridge.com , and I started crying, because I think that I actually understand it! The thinking around the statues, and attitude toward them is very sophisticated! I think I’m even…slowly… understanding the thinking behind Mary! I need to read Luke again. Reading a woman’s testimony about her conversion had me crying also, because it’s the SAME thing as what I was thinking about the whole thing! The fear of the Catholics…

I need some insight! I want to know why I spend all of my time looking up nuns and monks, and their daily lives. I need to have a few insights… I’m praying HARD! I’m looking to the Bible, and prayer, because God and his word is the only one I truly trust. But I would like to have your views.

I thank you for reading my very long story!
Do what we did…go in with an open mind. When you go to Mass with an open mind…you see things in a whole new light…

But beware…many people have said that is what lead them to the Church. Once we started going to Mass…we never looked back.

Yep. I knew the very first time that I went to Mass that this is true worship of God. I was done. 😃

Thanks All!

I am leaving the Church.

As I look around your website I am only reminded of the infallible nature of a convicted catholic. Your pope may be infallable but no sirs and madams you are not. Jesus is bigger than your church, therefore he exists outside of it. It is really a pity though, most of you here on this thread and most of you in this forum have just pushed a certain many of us to this point.

and don’t worry, just go ahead and use my words against me i probably won’t come back.

I pray for actual Christian unity.
