Hello,
I need some prayers.
I have decided to quit smoking, having my last cig tonight.
This has been a real burden for me on so many levels. I never smoke around the kids or hubby but started again (after a year and a half smober) after my baby had colic for 5 months.
Smoking is so bad for you and I seriously can’t sleep b/c I know this (so please don’t try to scare me as a way of support 😉 ) but I know I am addicted.
Anyway, I am using the same nicotine free system that I used when I quit for a year and a half-starting in the morning.

Please, please, please pray for me.
If you have had a successful quit please feel free to let me know.

I’ll pray for you. Every time you get a craving, just remember to make the sacrifice for God, say a prayer. It makes it easier to kick an addiction. I hope it works.

👍 Quitting cigs. was the crowning achievement of my life…I was up to 2 packs after smoking for 13 years. See if family will let you hide in bed for the weekend. Great decision…your babies will be so proud of you! 😃

We’ll pray for your perseverance! God Bless.

I quit smoking about 5 years ago. For me it was a process where I gradually phased smoking out of my life. It began by ONLY smoking outside, never smoking in the car or inside. Then I made it very inconvienient to smoke. I put the lighter in the glove box of the car and the smokes on the top of the frigde.
Also, when I jonzed very badly, I would stuff my mouth full of sugar free gum and SMACK it like no come tomorrow.
I wish you well.

I didn’t think of sugar free gum! Tanks. Weight gain is a fear and that would help.
I don’t smoke aroudn anyone. More of a closet smoker. Was afraid all my Catholic friends would judge this mommy of two. Only in the garage. 🙂

Good for you! Thanks for the encouragement.

Dear LynnieLew,

I’ve never smoked (cigarettes, that is) so I can’t say I know what you’re going through. However, I had an addiction of similar intensity until recently, when I gave it to St. Joseph (my patron). I asked for his glorious intercession by saying the following prayer for nine days:

1900 Year-Old Novena To St. Joseph:

O, St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the Throne of God, I place in you all my interests and desires. O, St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain from me, from your Divine Son, all spiritual blessings through Jesus Christ Our Lord; so that having engaged here below your Heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you and Jesus asleep in your arms. I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name, and kiss His fine Head for me, and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, patron of departing souls, pray for us. Amen.

(Say for 9 mornings for anything you want. It has been seldom known to fail. Whoever reads this prayer, hears it read, or carries it, will never die a sudden death, nor be drowned, nor will poison take effect in them. They will not fall into the hands of the enemy, nor be burned in any fire, nor will they be defeated in battle. This prayer should be made known everywhere.)

I can’t verify the veracity of the promises listed in ( ), but I can say that ever since I said this prayer for nine days, I haven’t had the slightest trouble resisting the temptation that was so troubling before. I’ll say this prayer for you for the next nine days. It works! God bless you for making this important decision.

You are totally in my prayers! This is such a fabulous decision, for you and for your family. 👍

Sugarfree gum totally helps; also, drinking water- having a bottle around to sip on when the urge strikes can be a lifesaver.

Congrats and good luck! :clapping:

I quit 5 months ago last Thursday. It’s a rough road but you can do it. I’ll pray for you. Good luck.

Congratulations!!

I quit 7 years and 7 months ago. It was a slow process like one of the other posters. I simply ran out of places that I allowed myself to light up…One day I just quit. I avoided all the places that I had previously allowed myself to smoke, avoided coffee breaks with smokers, actually cut down on coffee consumption. I do know that if I allow myself to take one cig., I would be right back at it. It is a struggle, but it does ease up…The third week was the worst, so have LOTs of gum ready! You will be greatly rewarded…you will save a ton of money, you will be able to go places non-smokers go and be able to breath. Your family will not complain about the cig. breath, etc…GO, girl, GO !!!

Love and peace

Well, today is day one and I must admit I am a little cranky. I almost feel like I can’t catch my breath.

I have said the Novena for St. Joseph, gotten rid of anything smoke related and took my herbal supplements.

Thanks for the prayers!

You CAN do it! It’s been 4 months since I’ve had a smoke. I feel so much better! I only smoked outside, too. You don’t smoke AS MUCH that way, but you’re STILL smoking. Hang in there, I know what you are feeling. The only way to beat cigs is to truly WANT to quit. Take it day by day , stay busy and gum does help. We’re all human, so don’t worry about being judged! Good luck & God Bless!

Greetings

I really wish you well. I quit smoking about 15 years ago after smokng for 40 years. I had tried so many times and had gone through so many different stop smoking programs. Each time, it was that first little puff that was my downfall. I knew that and finally, FINALLY, for whatever reason, I saw myself as an ex-smoker, hours after I took that last cig and knew I would never ever take that one little puff, ever.
I thought it was the hardest thing I had ever done in my life.

Life is full of surprises. Last year, in March, I lost a third of my right lung to lung cancer and went though 7 weeks of daily radiation treatments. The surgery and the radiation damaged nerves in my right arm and right eye and the deep radiation left me with breathing problems. I am cancer free as best the regular monitoring can tell us but there is a 50% chance of it returning. Of course there is a 50% chance it will not, too, which means I am cured.

The point is, quitting is really hard but it is a “walk in the park” next to dealing with lung cancer.

I urge all of you former smokers and you smokers, no, I BEG YOU, to get lung screening on a regular basis. Lung cancer is the number one cancer killer. Do you know why? It is the “invisible” cancer. The little ribbon for lung cancer is clear plastic (breast cancer is pink) sybolic of it being invisible. This means you are pretty much symptom free while it is still treatable. I was so lucky to catch mine in the early stages. Ask or demand your doctor orders lung xrays every few years.

I thought having quit when I did would protect me but, sadly, I smoked too long and the damage was done.

Hang in there, dear. Drink lots of water and take as many showers a day as you can. It removes traces of cigarette smell that triggers cravings. Make sure all your clothes are fresh smelling.

Here is another thing I learned when I was a weight management consultant. Your body, when you are fully addicted reacts with cigarettes in a pecular way. It acts like they are food. If you cut your calories very very low, your body goes into a starvation mode and your metabolism slows way down. It does the same thing when you quit smoking. That is the primary reason for weight gain. The way to combat this and keep your metabolism going strong is excercise.

Here is the zinger! I have learned a lot about cancer lately. Excercise is also now considered one of the things that helps prevent cancer. Consider this if you have been a long time smoker and get into a good healthy habit of excercise now.

My prayers are with you.

I quit just over 7 years ago after smoking at least a pack a day for 15 years. It was really tough for awhile, but as time passed it got better and eventually it became the norm for me to be a non-smoker. Prayer, in particular the Rosary, was what helped me through. God Bless you. I will pray for you.
