Dear Diane:
You have done a service to Fr. Haley. Thank you.
In Christ, Michael
If Fr. Haley has not been in contact with the network of priests through Opus Bono Sacerdotii, hopefully it will happen.
I can’t judge his guilt or innocence, but all are entitled to due process and fair judgment. Due process seems to have been sidestepped. One look at what has happened to him is evidence enough for me of the unfairness for priests who stand accused and are removed with little or no help at all.
Please note that there are phone numbers listed. Many priests in this situation would not have the internet. Also, it is not a toll free number so some help may be needed in that regard.
The other option for people is to contact Opus Bono with the name of the priest. I simply sent the links of the articles to Joe Maher of Opus Bono.
Hopefully, Father Haley is aware that we can all pray for quick and fair resolution. I also try to keep in mind that the worst persecutions are so Christ-like to bear. Who was more innocent than our Lord? My hope is that Fr. Haley does not fully fall into a state of spiritual despair, but for love of God and the Church given to us by Jesus Christ, presses on and prays for the courage needed to endur all that he is now and will likely continue to endur.
Priests, Bishops and Cardinals, nor the Pope are Jesus Christ, who was all-perfect. The Church is made up of an ecclesial body that is human and just as prone to the effects of original sin as the rest of us. This goes to any priest who may be guilty, but it also goes to members of the hierarchy - bishops and cardinals - that may have succumbed to various sins potentially wrapped into a case like this.
Opus Bono Sacerdotii does not judge guilt or innocence. It simply ensures that priests have access to the tools needed to defend themselves. Their earning power is next to nothing so when you put a priest out on the street based on “zero-tolerance” before he has had due process, in effect, he immediately begins a sentence without fair judgment.
The network of lay people and priests serving Opus Bono know that Christ came down to save us from our sinfulness. Even if a priest had given in to human temptation, in the worst possible way, Christ commands us to love and leave the judgment to Him. This does not try to sidestep judgment in the court of law. If one has wronged another and violated the law, and found guilty, then certainly there should be a just human punishment.
The whole point is that priests should not be serving a sentence right out of the shoot. Think of the priest that you love so much in your parish and then imagine him standing accused, then left out in the cold with no money for defense. There are many priests who turned out to be innocent after all of this. Even an innocent priest cannot possibly defend himself without money. Even an innocent priest - a human being - is capable of falling into despair.
It sounds to me like Fr. Haley is just about there.
We should pray for the conversion of all.
We all need to pray
