And our OP said this priest is from another country, English is not his first language. It is very possible that he has a good grasp of English but does not have the more subtle words to communicate. Think of all of those funny Amazon descriptions, or simply go type some poetry into Google Translate. Literal translations can come out funny, awkward, harsh or even completely wrong. Give the priest the benefit of compassion, he may not have words other than literal terms.
