A Pro-Life Priest and Catholic Morality?

Florida has the most senior citizen residents and visitors of any state in the Union. A very wealthy Catholic Church is located on the Gulf Coast of Florida. Ninety-five percent of the parishioners are senior citizens. There are very few children in the church.
This church has a rector who was an assistant to the diocesan bishop and who has a doctorate in theology. Some parishioners appreciate his homilies and believe that the priest is very intelligent. The priest also believes that he is very intelligent.
However, a pro-life controversy has arisen in the church. When asked about pro-life, the priest responds as follows:
“I hate to burst your bubbles. A parishioner can vote for a pro-choice candidate because there is more than one way to be pro-life. Pro-life can mean stopping the wars in Iraq and elsewhere. Pro-life can mean saving Haitians and other persons from hunger and disease.”
These comments have caused some parishioners to pray the pro-life rosary with regard to this priest. Other parishioners are delighted and pass (under the tables in the parish hall) articles and a book relating to voting for Democratic pro-choice candidates.
Thus, the church is somewhat split. It is not a deep split because a significant number of parishioners are in Florida for only four months or less each year. Yet, it is an on-going division.
Do the forum members have a solution for this division?

This priest is bargaining with G*D! His arguments are akin to something that happens in Islam. In Al-Koran it is prohibited to draw, paint, or otherwise create an image of any living thing whether on earth, in the sky or beneath the seas. If one does, they will have to bring the image to life on judgement day, and when they can’t (since only Allah can do these things) they will be condemned to Hell for eternity.
Well, the Shite Moslems in Iraq, Iran, and Pakistan created the “Persian Miniature Paintings” in which animals will have tails and feet that have flowers or leaves growing from them, and have scenes with human images done in reverse perspective, so the images appear to float…and since everyone knows that such things cannot exist, the artist will not be condemned.
The Koran also prohibits the use of Gold for any object, and there are many mosques with golden domes. The reality is that these domes are not clad in gold. they are covered with glazed ceramic tiles that are glazed to look like gold…thus the architects and builders are not guilty of sinning.
It is my belief that all such people will have to answer to The Lord comes their judgement.
 
His comments may be technically accurate but politically speaking, when a politician states his position (pro-life or pro-choice) it is almost always understood to be his/her opinion regarding abortion. I wonder if he was just making an attempt at sounding clever and didn’t realize the confusion he was causing with his statement.
 
It seems to me that he is encouraging people to not be single-issue voters. Ceaușescu was “pro-life” too in the abortion sense.
