A local parish is doing The Purpose Driven Life for Lent. A few of my family and friends have decided to do it as well. Feel free to see our progress at

OR Feel free to get a copy of the book and join us! (We’re on day 3 already so you have to do some catch up!)

That’s nice but just be careful. That is not a Catholic book and it does take some small pot-shots at Catholicism. The author lists one Catholic bible as a reference but if you go through the book you’ll see that he never actually used it.

There are several Catholic books that are much more enriching. If you want, I’ll get some titles for you.

God bless

As I have said before…there are tons and tons of books written by Catholics (saints, theologians and spiritual writers who aren’t canonized, but are still orthodox, and contemporary theologians and spiritual writers). There are enough to last anyone a lifetime- why read something else? Maybe I am a bit biased- I find most of those self-help books to be a bit…mushy for me.

“This Rock” magazine awhile back had an excellent article on this book and the problems it could cause for Catholics who are not well-catechized (faith alone, Scripture alone, etc.). Check the on-line copies of “This Rock” on this site…I don’t have my old issues here with me now or I’d tell you exactly where to find it.
There are way too many good Catholic-based books to use…the only reason I can see a parish using this one is because it’s the trendy thing to do nowadays. Not a good reason.

Wanna try that link again?

Thanks for your insight all!
Sorry. The thread I was trying to link you to is in the Popular Media forum entitled “Purpose Driven Life - anyone read this NY times bestseller?”

Anyway, the suggested Catholic alternative is Introduction to the Devout Life by Frances DeSales.

God bless.
