I was reading an article on Crisis entitled “Benedict’s Essay Is an Implicit Rebuke of Amoris Laetitia”. Its a great article, but I ran across this statement “which essentially reduced relationships to sexual desire and utility”.

That statement greatly intrigued me as it is so true. While I can’t say that I reduce every relationship I have to one of sexual desire, many of my relationships are based on utility, or just an aimless friendship/socialization.

It seems to me that there must be an goal of relationships ordered towards a Christian end. So we see that relationships based on utility and sex are not the ideal - but what is the ideal?

You don’t need to be besties with everyone you meet, and some relationships are fleeting and centered around a discrete purpose (ie the UPS guy who dropped off your package) but if you keep an awareness that everybody you meet is beloved of God and made in His image, you’re off to a good start.

This reminds me of a line from the movie “Interstellar” when Anne Hathaway says somewhat angrily, “We love people who have died. Where’s the social utility in that?”
