i’m having a discussion about.
You do know that the man Jesus was talking to was named Simon bar Jonah, don’t you?

Let’s take a look at the conversation in context:
Mat 16:17-19 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
And I tell you,you are Peter(i.e. Rock), and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
(emphasis mine)

Notice that after Jesus renames him from Simon bar Jonah to Kepha(Peter), Then Jesus says He will give Peter the keys of the kingdom of heaven and the power to bind and loose. And further, that this binding and loosing will have the same effect in heaven.

Now, when we look at the entire conversation, it is quite clear that Jesus changes Simons name to Rock ( it is always a sign of a momentous change in the Bible when God changes someones name) , says He will found His church on this Rock, and then proceeds to give Peter the keys of the Kingdom and the power to bind and loose which will be bound in heaven as well as earth.

Grace and peace to you.

Verse 18 Jesus says "thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church. The name Peter is translated from the word “petros” which very simply means “rock”. But right after that Jesus says “upon this rock will I build my church”. The word “rock” is translated from the Greek word “petra” which is the feminine tense of the word “petros”. The feminine tense of a word in the Greek is used when that word is intended figuratively.

Yes, but as previously stated, Jesus spoke Aramaic, Matthew was written in Aramaic.

Matthew 16:18 would read “You are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my church and the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.”

Kepha means rock. As in “You are Rock and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of the netherworld will not prevail against it.”

You can seriously only believe that Peter himself is the rock or believe he AND his faith or Jesus is the rock(in Matthew 16:18) for the following verses to make sense. Why in the world, if Peter wasn’t the rock, would Jesus give Peter the keys to the kingdom AND the power to bind and loose.

Peter was the rock.

An interesting thing we should address is a topic at
THIS thread.
