Hello everyone,

I’m making a film analysis for school about clock work orange. In this assignment I need to talk about intertextuality (this means things that are references from the real world.). In this movie the crucifixion is talked about. I wanted to talk more about this in my analysis. But in this assignment I need to be very specific from wich the original part originates from. This in the assignment “For instance, if you describe a scene in which you recognize a biblical clue, please explain specifically to which part of the Bible (and to which biblical story) the clue refers back.”

So I wanted to know in which part of the bible did Jesus get crucified? I did some research and I didn’t fully understand what I found. I found this Matthew 27:32-56 should that be enough information?

Btw sorry if I am not clear or describe my question clearly I’m not a native speaker

But thanks in advance 🙂

Specifically, Jesus is crucified in the following chapters:
Mark 15
Matthew 27
Luke 23
John 19

I include the full chapter for the best context but you can narrow it down depending on how much or how little you want to reference. Each gospel focuses on different aspects of the events so read them all and choose the best for your purposes.

There are also numerous references in the epistles of St. Paul and others, but the gospels are where the events are specifically described originally, so those are your best bet. Based on the wording of the question I think you could probably get away with just saying “it references the crucifixion of Jesus”, but i think you would get the most out of the assignment by reading the text.

I recall there is a part where Alex is reading BIble in prison and says he loved all the sex, violence, etc and you then see Alex with a bunch of women feeding him fruit, and then Alex wearing Roman Soldier gear and whipping Jesus. So you could cite to that part of the film and cite the verse of Jesus being scourged and nailed to cross or cite to another verse like King Herod who had those kind of parties with women.

But the deeper theme of Clockwork is moral choice and free will. In the prison, Alex hears about the surgery that “makes you good” and said he wants to do that and priest says to him “the question is: does this really make a man good? Goodness comes from within. Goodness is chosen. As soon as a man ceases to choose, he ceases to be a man.” That is whole theme of film and big theme of Christianity - Christ died for our sins and now we have the choice to
(A) freely choose to do his will and be saved or
(B) not do his will and not be saved.

For this choice between (A) and (B) you can cite to John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father except by me” so Jesus is telling us we can freely choose (A) or (B)

WHen Alex leaves prison he is “good” and is making good choices but involuntarily due to the treatment, he is a “Clockwork Orange” (a robot) since he’s no longer a man who is freely choosing (A) or (B) above, instead he has no free will.

I also think there is a scene where after Alex leaves prison an old man beats him up and Alex says something like “I was going to turn him the other cheek” (in reference to Matthew 5:39), so Alex sees himself as a Christ figure even though he’s not since he’s not freely choosing to do good.
