A question about the Bible.

Recently a few days ago, a friend and I were discussing about honesty in religions and he says “Well the Old Testament says you can lie to your wife.” And I asked him to show me the Book, Chapter, and Verse, my friend said he didn’t remember which Book of the Old Testament he found it but clearly said that it says clearly that a man can lie to his wife. Is this true? What Book, Chapter, and Verse is this text found? What is the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant interpretations of this text?

Are you sure it wasn’t “lie” as in “sleep with”? That’s the most common context the word “lie” is used in the Old Testament.

Maybe he meant “lie with” as in sexual relations.

2 Samuel 11…I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your neighbor and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun."

I don’t think its that text you mean, my friend here, on MSN said this, I want to know what Book, Chapter, and Verse he’s talking about.

As much as I agree with the informed bible readers here about what your friend actually meant, I would not let on to that.
He made a postive claim. He can not back it up. While posters here have- he has not.
You must get him to cite the narrative directly.
Not sure what or why he is making this a particular point of discusssion with you, but I would warn you now that it may not be of good intentions. I do hope I am wrong.

It could also be something heard word of mouth, with no real substantiation. I recall a long time ago discussing something with a Muslim online, and he made the open comment that there are honor killings commanded of in the Old Testament. I asked him to cite where any such thing is sanctioned in the Old Testament, to which he immediately backed down. Most likely he read it on some website and thought it was fair to throw into the game…which unfortunately a lot of people do.

Just to throw stuff around…

The first thing that came to mind was Abraham, who twice tells someone that Sarah is his sister. Some might say, “Hey, that’s lying!” But Abraham later reveals that Sarah is his half-sister…so in other words, he’s not lying, she technically is his sister by relation, it’s just they didn’t come from the same mother.
