Sorry, yet another Muslim question. But this is something which intrigues me.

according to the notes I’m using to study Holy Qur’an, different portions of the surat which make up Qur’an were revealed at different times.

Now, the Bible follows a roughly chronological ordering of books, starting with Creation and ending with a detail of the future Judgement. The OT divides into Torah (Laws), Neviim(History of Israel) and Ketuvim (prophecies of the prophets on the future Moshiach). The New Testament can also be broken down logically into the Gospels, the Letters of Paul and the Revelations.

Whilst I’m aware that the surat themselves usually follow a ‘ladder’ of sorts, where small groups of surat make a whole and complete lesson on one specific spiritual teaching or law, but given that many surat in the Qur’an were revealed in parts, at different times and at different locations, how were they put together into the Qur’an we know today?

During the time of Muhammed, some of the Quran had been written by his disciples when Muhammed used to recite them, they were written using early Arabic ancient script (no pointing and no vowel marks) on papyrus and leather fabric, however, some versus of Quran were not written at all but his disciples where memorizing them.
  1. After Muhammed death Abu-Bakr ordered all versus of Quran to be written.
  2. During Uthman time (after around 14 years of Muhammed death), Uthman burnt all versions of Quran and wrote his own version:

  1. During the 5th Umayyad Caliph (after around 70 years of Muhammed death), pointing and vowel marks were added to the original text:

Conclusion: considering some ambiguous and contradicted versus in Quran, it’s unsafe to say that current Quran we have nowadays is not corrupted or even from GOD in the first place, read the following references:

***Sahih Muslim, Book 017, Number 4194:
**** Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 82, Number 817:
*A particular verse of the stoning punishment for stoning (male cleric) & (female cleric) was revealed to Muhammad, but now it’s not found in Quran.

"Puin is not alone in his enthusiasm. “The impact of the Yemeni manuscripts is still to be felt,” says Andrew Rippin, a professor of religious studies at the University of Calgary, who is at the forefront of Koranic studies today. "Their variant readings and verse orders are all very significant. Everybody agrees on that. These manuscripts say that the early history of the Koranic text is much more of an open question than many have suspected: the text was less stable, and therefore had less authority, than has always been claimed."

Err?

It’s “Law, Prophets, Writings” (even from a Christian perspective, I’d suggest).

Hi Kouyate, I found this website which places the surahs in chronological order as they were revealed. I’m sure you can find other similar sites but this should be a start.

The Quran was is not in Chronological order. And not required to be read in such a manner . It is not intended to document history .

As for the placement of verses , they are in the right place . The prophet specifically would instruct which verses go where.

Last and most important, the Quran is a consensus based oral document. Meaning that it was transferred by consensus through out the world. It is not preserved through manuscripts. It is preserved through memory. Including its punctuation.
