my 2yo fell down the BRICK steps in front today…(i have already kicked myself several times, don’t worry) and has a big goose egg on her forehead…green and red, the whole nine yards…in 5yrs, we’ve never had this happen between the two kids…so I’m a little weirded out – she seems fine (ice cream sandwich to the rescue) and is talking and chatting away with her brother…is there any real danger? It’s right above her eyebrow, on the flat part of her forehead, and I think it’s just a swelling to the bump – she’s due for a nap (now more than ever) and I"m wondering what to look for, watch for, etc…

(I know, I’m panicky…)

thanks ladies!!!

Keep applying ice to keep the swelling down.
Watch her for the next 24 hours (any nausea/vomiting, not normal behaviour, …you will know, if things are not right)

Do not beat yourself up - it happens.

Call her pediat. office and ask them.

This happened to our 2nd oldest once when she was 2, right in the same spot. We were at someone else’s house, and she tripped and cracked her head on their coffee table. I was horrified!! It got tremendously huge right away and she looked like the elephant man in less than a minute! I couldn’t believe it. Turns out that it is common for a bonk on the noggin (especially the forehead) to get huge and ugly. Unless she seems lethargic or starts to vomit, I wouldn’t worry too much. It looks much worse than it is. But I totally understand you freaking out. I did the same thing! :o If she lets you put ice on it, do it. Also, a little children’s motrin or tylenol might help any pain and reduce the swelling.

Thank you! I second the “elephant man” thing…LOL – awful to laugh, but that’s what I kept thinking…and my 4yo couldn’t stop gasping and “wwwwooowww…” etc and on and on…so of course, she freaked from that too…lol. No, she won’t let me ice it…(can’t blame her) but I did give her some tylenol…

Chances are your daughter will be fine. If it makes you feel better and you haven’t already done so, call the doctor and ask what to watch for.

I almost hate to add this but…

If you end up taking this child out in public in the next few days be ready for some critical looks from bystanders.

Everyone is so paranoid about child abuse/neglect. That’s not necessarily a bad thing but it makes life uncomfortable for parents when kids do manage to injure themselves.

You’re welcome. I totally understand where you were coming from on this one! 😃 Kids make life so much more interesting, don’t they? :bounce:

**OK, advice from the pediatric nurse here. Call the pediatrician. They may want X-rays, but since she is acting OK, I doubt it. Motrin and ice are excellent, but kids are notorious for fighting ice on a bump, so don’t be surprised. And if she starts acting abnormal or starts vomiting, then you’ll probably have to take her to the ER. **

**Chances are, she’s absolutely fine. Kids have hard noggins, thank God. **

don’t have advice but i will pray for you all.

(so nice to know we have a pediatric nurse here:thumbsup: )

DD has boo-boo bears in freezer, colorful terry cloth bears that you moisten and freeze, they become flexible when you twist them and an alternative to ice bags. For some reason our littlest one loves to put a bag of frozen peas on a boo-boo.

Thank you for giving the advice you did. 99% of the times it is ok. But, the parent should be very watchful for anything that can go wrong.

GOD BLESS you and your DC.

Ah, yes, goose-eggs on foreheads. They’re not just for kids, you know.

Next time you watch the movie Contact, pay attention to the scene where Jodie Foster is running up the hill at the Aricebo Observatory to confront Dr. Drumlin. She had a big one on her forehead. They had previously shot the scene where she gets off the jet on the ship near the second “machine” on Hokkaido, and she had cracked herself a good one on the doorway of the fuselage mockup.

Good advice given. Stuff happens. Ice it, watch for out-of-character behavior.

One of mine had a big egg on forehead from falling on a hard floor when little. I called the doc who told me to wake her every hour during the night, just to make sure she wasn’t unconscious. it eventually went away with no problems.

And also apply ice.

At least the swelling is going out, rather than into the brain. Don’t panic, it is probably not dangerous, but call your ped. and watch for nausea, make sure her eye dilation changes and is equal, if she stops wanting to play or acts "strange’ take her to teh ER.

So, how’s your daughter doing? Is she feeling better? Is her bump going down?
