No matter how habitual or how often a venial sin is committed, the accumulation never becomes mortal sin. Habitual, frequent venial sin can lead to a weakening of the will which might make one more susceptible to committing a mortal sin, but never in themselves become mortal sin no matter how many.As far as I know, there are only two types of sin: those that are mortal and those that aren’t. I suppose that habitual venial sins can creep into the category of sins that are mortal in nature, but maybe not “mortal” in an of themselves. For instance, cussing someone out in traffic probably isn’t mortal, if it’s only done once. If it’s done habitually, and leads to a coarsening of attitude towards others, then that’s probably different.
But I wouldn’t call that a 3rd category of sin.
In over 70 years of being an active Catholic, who reads extensively, have I ever read even a hint of a third level of sin.
