Just another disgruntled ubber traditionalist unhappy that he doesn’t have his own SSPX TV station espousing the theology of Leorard Feeney sending all non-catholics to hell and thier disdain for the Validity of the Norvos Ordo even when EWTN has shown us it can be done well when you take the directives seriously.
The Ubber tradiionalist and the liberals on the other hand hate EWTN because it does not espouse the catholcism of their own choice but reflects the church under the directives of Vatican 2 in keeping with the theology of JP2 and Pope Benedict those who reject the recent popes teachings are sure to be upset whether one is an ubber latin traditionalist or a cafeteria liberal catholic.
It comes down to jealously and the fact they wish they had a tv show of their own.
JUST SO. I think there is a lot of JEALOUSY and EGO inside Robert Sungenis because a lot of real scholars dont take him seriously. If he is so brilliant- how come no Catholic University would accept him in its PhD program ? He sports a phony PhD from Calamus, which is a diploma mill in England run by a hypno-therapist. Look it up.

Ummm… even if you discount Bob’s PhD, he still has more theological and scriptural credibility than you, or anybody on this list does… Anyone who has read any of his books, Not By… series especially, will see that he is a serious scholar, endorsed by many of the popular Catholic authors then…

Ahem, is anyone reading the OP and the fact that it is Sungenis scolding a “traditionalist?”

Original Post/Poster:D I get the feeling people are just seeing Sungenis’ name and piling on without reading the actual review.

I would agree… you can tell, considering they think he supports SSPX and Fr. Feeney… Goes to show, Catholics are not immune to ignorance either…

To broad brush that entire article off as mere jealousy is one of the major symptoms the article speaks of. An unwillingness to deal with serious issues.

Some of the subjects touched on arent as serious, while many are.

I had no idea Donovan doesnt have a doctorate in theology but is in charge of theology

EWTN is being co-opted and they are guilty of not looking in thier own mirror - POST Mother Angelica. She wasnt perfect, but since shes been out of charge EWTN has indeed and is falling victim to many of the issues the article covered.
Good Post. SUNGENIS raises some issues that are well worth discussing. EWTN is the only Catholic avenue for many shut-ins and the elderly.
Their conservative bent is not what we always get in our local parishes-- which tend to reflect the Bishops more liberal leanings.
My own parish gives away copies of the National Catholic Reporter, which is often a dissident voice, calling for changes to accomodate an American mind-set.
I don’t buy into Bob Sungenis’ arguments why he sought a PhD. from a diploma mill ( Calamus ). But thats another story. He certainly makes valid points sometimes. I think he likes being an iconoclast who never quite fits in anywhere. Well, thats ok. The world needs individualists, it makes life interesting!

There have always been disagreements among Catholics. The best thing to do, I think, is to keep ourselves, as much as possible, “one holy catholic and apostolic Church.”

Yeah like that guarantees anything. MacBrien the heretic at Notre Dame has a PHD and teaches graduate courses if thats the criteria he’s looking for than EWTN will even bigger troubleI guess Hans King PHD keeps him from error. The alphabets can be a detriment to one’s orthodoxy like anything else. What Sugenesis wants is an ubber traditionalist station that has it in for the Jews who control the Vatican and the US Governament yada yada.
Isn’t it courious he mentions the jealousy angle up front to disaude the argument althogetehr. Look he’s jealouus he got the can is working for himself, heck he writes on his website and his email practically begging me for money so he can keep afloat so it appears the ubber trads are not large enough in number to support his dissenting views much longer. Too bad he showed much promise early in his conversion but he has gone the way of Tertullian he is now more catholic than the pope, to holy to be associated with the Vatican 2 and Norvos ordo crowd. He has seen the errors of the past 5 popes and they all have missed the pope the keys to the kingdom lies with the ubber trads and not Office of Peter or so they would like us to believe.
I DON’T think MR. SUNGENIS can be characterized as an uber-traditionalist. He is not against the Novus Ordo Mass- just silly abuses of the liturgy, like many of us are. Despite his strained reasoning on why he got a degree from CALAMUS, a diploma mill,
he is an interesting character that makes us all think. I met him at a conference in PA once, and he was very gracious and polite in person. There’s more on the Calamus degree at
www.sungenisandthejews.com
p,s yes he does ask for money but so does CA and EWTN and everyone else that has their own " Apostolate ". I like using that word.

I don’t think it gets much better than this. A hypnotherapist with a specialization in past life regressions. In the time he can spare from supervising PhD programs in religious studies, the one field he seems to have missed in his holistic studies, he serves as both principal and acting rector for Calamus International University. I note he also claims degrees from the West Indies. Anyone want to bet that a search for those degrees would result in a finding that they were granted by CIU?

And the only other academic involved in Sungenis dissertation is his partner in crime. I wouldn’t let this guy debate my ferret on grooming techniques, and he wants to debate a Princeton PhD. Somebody help me, I’m gonna die laughing. (source) the above quote is from < www.sungenisandthejews.com >

On the grounds that the PhD degree from CALAMUS , is a re-writing of book he always intended to publish anyway. It is not serious scholarship in " Religious Studies " that would be equivilent to a PhD or ThD from Marquette, Catholic U. , Fordham, Gonzaga, Louvain, or even Faber State. I looked it up= Calamus sure looks like a diploma mill to me.

Are you aware of the quality of the theology being taught at those “Catholic” institutions that you listed?

Laurence, If you are implying that places like Fordham, Notre Dame, Marquette, Catholic U., Georgetown are no longer teaching traditional ( conservative ) Catholic Theology, you are probably correct. Is is possible that North America and Western Europe have evolved to a more nuanced and probing expression of Carholic theology to reflect the modern world ? The old Church of Law and structure that many of us grew up with doesn’t make any sense to many adult Catholics. We don’t see anything weong with alter girls and women deacons. Maybe in Africa or Latin America, still patriarchal cultures, the old Traditional Catholicism can grow. Maybe the Notre Dame’s are the true expression of an American Catholic Church breaking free of a too simple past when Mother Church had all the answers for her little children. We are not little anymore.

Oh my. And so the best answer for a traditional Catholic is to go to a place like Calamus, run by a Jewish (irony?) hypnotherapist, that pushes new age? We should pay them money to help them spread all that even more? Did you see the choices and how many of them are new agey?

Parapsychology, Holistic Studies, Hypnotherapy, New Age Studies, Regression and Reincarnation, Contemporary Spirituality.

Didn’t Mr. Sungenis say he picked CIU because they would take his geocentric paper? So he shopped it around really. There’s nothing wrong with the other college he started with is there? (Mary-something). But they wouldn’t take his paper and so he found a place that would.

He got a degree in theology with help from a scientist friend and a hypnotherapist? And if memory serves, he didn’t even do the researching on the fathers of the Church and geocentrism in that paper for his doctorate. That part of the work is going to come out in his next book. So how does a research theology doctorate get granted without really looking into the fathers? Kind of of a big thing to leave out.

Not too flattering any way you slice it. :o

Right - the US Catholic is trying to impose democratic culture on a hierarchy. Now if Jesus wanted that He would have given all of us the right to vote on His teachings. He didn’t, so we cannot change His teachings.

The idea we are too mature for 2,000 years of teaching is ludicrous. In fact, the way we now practice our faith would suggest immaturity. (Cafeteria Catholicism)

Jesus did not base His teachings on the times.

Good Post! Brenda. Please note that I do have admiration for Mr. Sungenis and his , Not By Faith Alone… series. Quality stuff.
I just thought this " Calamus " thing had a fishy smell to it. Many others like you agree. As for the state of Catholic Theology at universities like Maryvale, Notre Dame, Marquette, etc. — thats a BIG topic. We can discuss that on a new thread, if anyone is so inclined.
Pacem in Terris.

Thanks, Seagirt! 🙂 And ditto on the Not By Faith Alone. He should go back to things like that.

I can see why someone might think he supports SSPX now. I think he had one or two articles in favor of them.

…checking. Yep.

Here they are.
