This question has probably already been answered somewhere, and I apologize that I cannot find that answer.

As a Catechumen, it has recently been called to my attention that if not for baptism then surely for confirmation I need to provide the name of my patron saint. There is not a question in my mind who that is for me…St. Thomas More. He has so impacted my life for so long…it’s very hard for me to describe. 👍

My question, however, is this: Being female, it is appropriate that I have a male patron saint? I mean, are they going to totally freak out at the very thought?

I read something here around the end of last year about us not choosing our saint, but rather being chosen by them. That’s how I feel about St. Thomas More. He chose me, and has with the help of the Holy Spirit been guiding me to this point for so very long. Where I to name anyone else at this point, it’s be a sham…and I’d feel really guilty about “abandoning” the one who’s been pulling for me all this time.

So, what do you think? Is it totally inappropriate for me to share with others the fact that I truly believe that St. Thomas More is my patron saint?

There is absolutely nothing wrong or improper with a female having a male patron saint or a male having a female. I happen to have a female patron saint, Marie Bernard Soubirous, Saint Bernadette, and I am a male,

St. Thomas Moore is certainly a good choice, and I agree we don’t choose them as much as they choose us.

Congratulations and I wish you the best in your journey in the faith. You will be in my prayers. 🙂

My patron in Carmel (as a lay member of the Carmelite Order) is St. Angelus, a Carmelite priest and martyr. It is perfectly fine, as Palma has cited to have a patron saint of the opposite sex. It’s even fine to have more than one patron saint (for various aspects of our lives). I have 7 altogether! 😃

Except one is not presented for Confirmation as John, Richard, Michael, Mary, Peter, Lucy, Mark, O’bryan. One name for Confirmation is sufficient.
