Does anyone know of one??? Most of the ones I’ve seen online are good for teens but are wayyyyyy too long.

An Examination of Conscience for Teens

1. First Commandment

  • Do you worship the false gods of status, consumerism or peer approval?
  • Do you ignore or avoid old friends in order to be part of the popular crowd? Do you make unreasonable demands on your parents for clothes or money?
  • Do you give support to your peers when they tell racial or ethnic jokes? Do you show indifference toward the poor and think of them as losers by social standards?
2. Second Commandment
  • Do you use language that you would never speak in front of your grandmother?
  • Is your language a reflection of a low opinion of others and insults?
3. Third Commandment
  • Do you skip mass because few of your friends go to church or because you feel that the gift of God’s presence should be as entertaining as MTV?
4. Fourth Commandment
  • Do you thank your parents for what they do for you?
  • Do you offer to help around the house?
  • Do you value your family members as much as you do your friends?
5. Fifth Commandment
  • *Do you value your life and that of others? *
  • Do you drink and drive or travel with those who do?
  • *Do you experiment with drugs and show no regard to their effect on your grades, your self-respect or your relationships? *
  • Have you ever hit your girlfriend or boyfriend?
6. Sixth Commandment
  • *Do you use other people for your own selfish pleasure? *
  • Do you lie to get others to act against their values?
  • Do you see sex as a way to be popular or to rebel against your parents?
7. Seventh Commandment
  • Do you cheat on tests or homework?
  • Do you ever shoplift or take things that don’t belong to you?
8. Eighth Commandment
  • Do you gossip or pass on rumors that hurt other people?
  • *Can you be trusted to keep a confidence? *
  • Do you lie to protect your own ego, even if someone will be hurt?
9. Ninth Commandment
  • Are you envious of others? Do you resent their popularity or success?
  • Do you feel you have to put others down in order to feel better about yourself?
10. Tenth Commandment
  • *Do you resent your parents when they tell you they cannot afford to buy the things that you feel you need to keep up with your friends? *
  • Do you ever ask your parents what their financial worries are?

Sometimes teens need a long A of C because the modern world pulls the wool over their eyes.

As a recent graduate from teenhood, I have to say I find that E of C kind of patronizing. There are some good questions, but lots of them seem geared toward a rather young teen bracket. I think educating teens about responsibility and knowledge of sin is important, not necessarily in a “fire and brimstone” way, but a fair approach to the reality of sin. A real thorough E of C would be good, but be careful of scrupulosity, as teens have a tendency to go overboard.

I never liked anything that said “for teens”.
It has always irked me, since I was a teen and before…

Oh man, this old lady thought she had found a good one, too.😊

“…but are wayyyyyy too long.”

Goodness, make believe you’re texting on your phone.

We’re talking about a deeper relationship with Jesus through an understanding of our sins.

I need something I can put on an index card, okay? Since you don’t know how this will be used, or why it needs to be condensed, perhaps you could give me the benefit of the doubt and dispense with the sarcasm. I AM aware of the importance of the sacrament.

You did good. Teenagers see the world differently than adults and need the appropriate guidance. Yes, we all were teens and we all could have used what you offered… God bless…teachccd 🙂

1st. Commandment
Do I acknowledge that God is my creator, give God due respect and praise?
Have I sometimes had an attitude of indifference toward God or my beliefs?
Have I felt angry toward God because of my situation and circumstances?
Do I have other “gods” or priorities before God, such as my friends, grades, job, possessions, image, etc.?
Do I have a relationship/friendship that “rules” my life?
Have I ever been involved in the occult, or used horoscopes, ouija boards, seeking other “spirits” than God for guidance?

2nd. Commandment
Have I used profane language, cussing, or swearing?
Have I passively allowed slander or jokes aimed at demeaning my religion, church, or God to be said?
Have I allowed myself to be Mass while my heart has been far from God, apathetic and indifferent?

3rd. Commandment
Do I actively seek and communicate personally with God?
Do I get so frustrated that I am forced to go to church that I do not completely enter into the blessings of Mass?
Am I more caught up in the fact that I need to go to church that I don’t appreciate what is being offered to me?

4th. Commandment
Do I listen respectfully, and obey my parents?
Have I reacted negatively, or shown indifference, to my parents when they are concerned and interested in my daily activities?
Do I feel embarrassment toward my parents, their appearance, or behavior?
Have I held resentment toward my mom or dad for little things?
Do I lie to my parents?
Do I hold a grudge, and harbor bitterness, against either or both of my parents for mistakes they have made? Do I refuse to forgive?
Do I blame my mom or dad for my shortcomings?

5th. Commandment
Have I ever contemplated suicide or had thoughts of not desiring to be alive?
Have I injured or struck someone with the intention of seriously hurting him/her?
Have I ever advocated abortion either with my actions or opinions?
Have I endangered my life or others through the use of drugs or alcohol?
Have I ever killed someone’s spirit with my words, actions or blatant lack of attention and respect?

6th. Commandment
Have I involved myself in sexual activity, either by lustful thoughts, intercourse or inappropriate physical touching before the commitment of marriage? Do I see sex as a gift from God and something that should be saved for marriage ?
Have I used people physically for my own pleasure, comfort, security, or image?
Have I exposed myself to pornography-indecent shows, movies, explicit material on the Internet, etc.-that disrupt my thought-life?
Have I physically/sexually forced myself onto another?
Have I given my mind over to lustful thoughts or fantasies?
Have I talked about, joked about or enjoyed indecent, obscene conversation or stories?

7th. Commandment
Have I taken things that do not belong to me?
Have I been irresponsible in returning things that are not mine?
Have I copied on a test, paper or homework assignment, by taking answers or questions that should not have been in my possession?
Have I wasted my time at work by not doing a proper job?
Have I been extravagant about my spending my money with little or no concern toward the more needy?

8th. Commandment
Have I hurt someone’s name or reputation by taking part in gossip or slander?
Have I hurt others by talking about their failures or sins with little or no desire to help them?
Have I unfairly judged/labeled others based on their appearance or habits before getting to know them?
Have I been part of calling names or being mean toward others with my actions and words?
Have I been prejudiced against anyone because of his/her race, economic status, age, religion, or nationality?

9th. Commandment
Have I looked with desire toward another’s girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse?
Have felt greedy or envious toward others because of their relationships?

10th. Commandment
Do I habitually compare myself with others’ wealth, status, education, house, clothing or talents?
Am I jealous of others people’s good fortune, life, or success?
Do I have a low self-esteem because of my comparisons with others?
Do I spend more money and time than is necessary in making myself accepted and liked by others?
Do I focus only on what I don’t like about myself?
Do I misuse drugs, tobacco or alcohol , or cause physical damage to my body?
Do I take care of my physical, emotional and spiritual well-being ?

Now that you have reflected on your relationship toward God, toward other people, and toward yourself - ask yourself:
• For what do I seek forgiveness?
• How do I want God to transform me?
• What will I confess and ask God’s forgiveness and grace to change?

The postings are good ones. I just wonder how many Catholic teens think about those things prior to going into Confession (if they even bother to go themselves or ask someone to take them). I know that I never had that when I was a teen, then again my parents were pretty strict on me. When I went to communal penance services as a teen, my mother would often elbow me during the examination of conscience if it was something that she felt applied to me.

Also, I’d include in the examination about modesty & appropriate dress/wardrobe especially for Holy Mass and school (and related after school activities). I have to keep my uncharitable thoughts to myself when I see teens dressed inappropriately for Holy Mass when it only takes a few extra seconds to put on a nice modest top and trousers/pants compared to a really bad looking pair of jeans (either full of holes, tight or super baggy) with a tee shirt with a questionable logo on it.
