Is it a sin for someone who is of legal age (18+) to smoke a cigar every now and then, say once a week? Is it a sin against the body? Or is it fine in moderation? Do the specific circumstances matter?

I look forward to everyone’s (name removed by moderator)ut.

God bless!

I just saw cops on TV, clarify what is in your cigar?:tsktsk:  Just picking:p As long as your not abusing them it should be fine, and as long as…its not the kind of cigar the cops busted on TV:tsktsk:  God Bless

Only if you blow the smoke in my face then you face the fist from hell 🙂

I think its a sin. “Thou Shalt Not Kill” comes to mind. Nothing good comes from tobacco smoking and you can get seriously ill or develop cancer from it, you don’t know how well your body reacts to the poisons. Even the once a week smoke can turn to more frequent until its habit. You are slowly killing your body and you can control this more so than say where you live.

I believe this body is a gift of God and God would like you to take care of it the best you can. We are stewards of this body. Smoking isn’t taking care of the body, you are harming it.

This also goes with diet and exercise. To me, if you are lazy and do nothing and have nothing wrong with yourself (say a hormone problem, injured for examples) and you let yourself go, you are commiting a sin.

I believe if you eat garbage (artificial colours, flavours, and perservatives, high fat, low nutrition foods to name a few) you are commiting a sin, which type depends on why you are doing it.

Addiction is a different thing and takes time and prayer to get over it but, it can be conquered with God’s help.

The question is this. Is it a sin to smoke a cigar?

The answer is No it is NOT a sin to smoke a cigar.

The best Priest I ever knew smoked cigars, he was a Monsenior.

Not in and of itself.

Pleasure does.

In moderation, there is no problem.
Even the once a week smoke can turn to more frequent until its habit.
This is the virtue of temperance and self-mastery that the Church always talks about. A cigar smoker having educated himself about the risks of smoking can make a legitimate prudential judgement about whether or not to smoke and not incurr even venial sin.

What is more dangerous in my opinion is submitting to the secular cult of the body that worships the false god of health. From the CCC:
2289 If morality requires respect for the life of the body, it does not make it an absolute value. It rejects a neo-pagan notion that tends to promote the cult of the body, to sacrifice everything for it’s sake, to idolize physical perfection and success at sports. By its selective preference of the strong over the weak, such a conception can lead to the perversion of human relationships.
2290 The virtue of temperance disposes us to avoid every kind of excess: the abuse of food, alcohol, tobacco, or medicine. Those incur grave guilt who, by drunkenness or a love of speed, endanger their own and others’ safety on the road, at sea, or in the air.

Nothing good comes from tobacco smokin
Someone has obviously never experienced the calming, relaxing qualities of a good smoke. Smoking isn’t for everyone, and over smoking isn’t for ANYONE, but if Paul can recommend drinking wine for stomach ailments, I think that a nice occaisional smoke can be recommended for those who are tense.

I’m a pipe man myself, but there is no inherent sin in smoking a cigar. Smoking cigarettes on the other hand…that’s a sin against good taste 😛

The traditional and time-honored answer is that cigars and other pleasures are luxuries that could become extravagances that could become occasions of sins but are not wrong in themselves. I am not a smoker, but I just finished a harrowing epidemiology exam at school, and believe me, even knowing exactly what smoking does to the human body, I am ready to smoke a tree trunk!😃

I was out with some friends for St Patrick’s Day ☘️

and in honor of himself I smoked a McAnudo 😉

No, it is not a sin. God created everything good, that includes tobacco. The sin is when you get addicted. That said, I love to smoke cigars every once in a while.

Nothing at all wrong with an occasional cigar and bourbon…
Red wine is the teaching of God’s Church. Anathema to those who say otherwise.😃 😛

McAnudo’s are good. My favorite cigar is the Monte Cristo.

It’s not a sin to smoke a cigar once in awhile. Just be considerate of those who may find the smoke offensive, or those who may resent you smelling like smoke (like if you have one then go to someone’s house to visit them).
